F. J. Rowe
Frederick James Rowe (c. 1844 – 5 January 1909) was a Professor of English Literature and sometime Principal at the Presidency College in Calcutta, India. He edited and wrote introductions for numerous collections of the works of Alfred Lord Tennyson. He also collaborated with William Trego Webb to produce a number of English grammar books for Indian students. Before moving to Presidency College, Rowe was a teacher of English at La Martiniere College in Calcutta. He taught at the school between 1868 and 1870 during which time he penned the school song '' Vive La Martiniere''. The song is now an inseparable part of all school ceremonies, and is sung not just at the Calcutta College but at the other La Martiniere Schools in Lyon, France, and in Lucknow, India, all of which were founded by an endowment from the French adventurer Major General Claude Martin. Presidency University, Kolkata (formerly known as Presidency College, Kolkata) is a second major public state aided research university located in College Street, Kolkata. Considered as one of best colleges when Presidency College was affiliated to University of Calcutta. Established in 1817, it is the oldest college in India (in Asia as well). It was formerly known as Hindu College and then Presidency College and now Presidency University. The institution was elevated to university status in 2010 after functioning as a top constituent college of the University of Calcutta for about 193 years. Claude Martin
Major-General Claude Martin (5 January 1735 – 13 September 1800) was a French army officer who served in the French and later British East India companies in colonial India. Martin rose to the rank of major-general in the British East India Company's Bengal Army. Martin was born in Lyon, France, into a humble background, and was a self-made man who left a substantial lasting legacy in the form of his writings, buildings and the educational institutions he founded posthumously. There are now ten schools named after him, two in Lucknow, two in Calcutta and six in Lyon. The small village of Martin Purwa in India was also named after him.
