The Erythropotamos ( el, Ερυθροπόταμος, meaning "red river") or Luda reka ( bg, Луда река, meaning "mad river") is a river in southern Bulgaria (Haskovo Province) and northeastern Greece ( Evros regional unit). Its Turkish name was ''Kızıldelisu''. Its source is near Mega Dereio. It flows into the Maritsa (Evros) near Didymoteicho. The source of the river is in the eastern Rhodope Mountains in the western Evros regional unit, Greece, near the village Mikro Dereio. It crosses the border with Bulgaria near Gorno Lukovo in the Ivaylovgrad municipality, and forms the Greek-Bulgarian border for several kilometers. It crosses back into Greece between the villages Siv Kladenets and Alepochori. Didymoteicho ( el, Διδυμότειχο, Didymóteicho ) is a city located on the eastern edge of the Evros regional unit of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace, in northeastern Greece. It is the seat of the municipality of the same name. The town (pop. 9,263 in 2011) sits on a plain and located south east of Svilengrad, south of Edirne, Turkey and Orestiada, west of Uzunköprü, Turkey, about 20 km north of Soufli and about 90 km north of Alexandroupoli. The municipality of Didymóteicho has a land area of 565.4 km² and a population of 19,493 inhabitants. Name "Didymoteicho" is the modern Greek form of , ''Didymóteichon'', from , ''dídymos'', "twin" and , ''teîchos'', "wall". Byala reka ( bg, Бяла река, meaning ''White river''; el, Ασπροπόταμος) is a river in the Rhodope Mountains in Southern Bulgaria, the longest tributary of Luda reka. Metaxades
Metaxades ( el, Μεταξάδες, ) is a large village and a former municipality in the Evros regional unit, East Macedonia and Thrace, Greece. Since the 2011 local government reform it is part of the municipality Didymoteicho, of which it is a municipal unit. The municipal unit has an area of 211.238 km2. In 2011 its population was 687 for the village, 717 for the community and 3,415 for the municipality. It's a settlement where the popular form of the most characteristic industrial buildings of Thrace was created. These buildings are the koukoulospita (cocoon houses) made for housing families and hosting sericulture as a homemade activity. Mega Dereio
Mega Dereio () is a village in the central part of the Evros regional unit in Greece. It is part of the municipal unit of Orfeas within the municipality of Soufli. Together with 6 other villages, it forms the community of Mikro Dereio. It is situated near the upper course of the river Erythropotamos, in the Eastern Rhodope Mountains. In 2011 its population was 528. The Greek National Road 53 (Alexandroupoli – Mikro Dereio – Kyprinos – Ormenio) passes through the village. Population History The village was founded by the Ottoman Turks in the 14th century. It was known as ''Büyük Dervent'' in Turkish, and Голям Дервент ''Golyam Dervent'' in Bulgarian. Mikro Dereio
Mikro Dereio ( el, Μικρό Δέρειο) is a village and a community in the central part of the Evros regional unit in Greece. It is situated on the left bank of the river Erythropotamos, in the Eastern Rhodope Mountains. The border with Bulgaria is 5 km to the north. Mikro Dereio is on the Greek National Road 53. In 2011 its population was 158 for the settlement and 1,903 for the community, making it the most populous community of the municipal unit of Orfeas. The community consists of the villages Mikro Dereio, Geriko, Goniko, Mega Dereio, Petrolofos, Roussa and Sidirochori. Mani, Evros
Mani ( el, Μάνη) is a village and a community in the municipality of Didymoteicho in the Evros regional unit, Greece. It is situated near the left bank of the river Erythropotamos, 2 km west of Karoti, 4 km northeast of Kyani and 10 km northwest of Didymoteicho town centre. In 2011 its population was 385 for the village and 538 for the community, which includes the villages Evgeniko and Sitaria. Its elevation is 55 m. Koufovouno ( el, Κουφόβουνο) is a settlement in the municipality of Didymoteicho in the northern Evros regional unit, Greece. It is situated on a low hill near the right bank of the river Erythropotamos, at 70 m elevation. In 2011 its population was 629. It is 3 km southwest of Ellinochori, 5 km southeast of Kyani, and 5 km west of Didymoteicho. History During the Ottoman period, Koufovouno was inhabited mostly by Bulgarians and Turks.
