Entasis (company)
Entasis is a Danish architecture firm based in Copenhagen. It takens its name from the Greek word for tension. History Entasis was founded by Christian and Signe Cold in 1996. Their first building, a new main entrance for Copenhagen Zoo, was awarded the AIA Prize 'Best Building in Europe 1998'. In 2007 the firm won the open international competition for the redevelopment of the former Carlsberg brewery site in Copenhagen, with a proposal which, in reaction to Modernist planning, relied on dense, Medieval town centres for inspiration. An emphasis on physical density and the human scale are characteristic of their work. The same trend is seen in their entry for the Søtorvet competition in Silkeborg which they won in 2010. Spinderiet (Copenhagen)
Spinderiet (literal translation, lit. "The Spinning Mill") is a shopping centre located next to Valby station in the Valby district of Copenhagen, Denmark. Inaugurated in 2008, it incorporates the converted buildings of a cotton mill from 1907. The mixed use development also contains office space and apartments. History The cotton mill The converted cotton mill was originally built from 1905 to 1907 by De Danske Bomuldsspinderier, Danish Cotton Factories, a now defunct company which traced its history back to 1892 when Marius Windfeld-Hansen founded Vejle Cotton Mill in Vejle. In 1901 the company was merged with Vejle Cotton Factory, also in Vejle, and the Mogensen Mill in Odense. Nykredit Architecture Prize
The Nykredit Architecture Prize is the largest Danish architecture prize. Founded by the Nykredit Foundation (an arm of the Nykredit Group), it is awarded annually to a person, or group of people, who have personally, or through their work, made a significant contribution to the building industry in the form of architecture or planning, etc. The recipient receives DKK 500,000, making it one of the largest architecture prizes in the world in terms of prize money. World Architecture Festival
The World Architecture Festival (WAF) is an annual festival and awards ceremony, one of the most prestigious events dedicated to the architecture and development industry. The first four events were held in Barcelona, from 2008 to 2011, at which point the festival moved to Singapore for four years. Since 2016, host cities have included Berlin and Amsterdam. It is the only event where around 550 shortlisted architects present their projects live in crit rooms to a judging panel. One of these projects is awarded the World Building of the Year title. Each year the World Architecture Festival publishes a list of the winners of the awards on their official website. Valby
Valby () is one of the 10 official districts of Copenhagen, Denmark. It is in the southwestern corner of Copenhagen Municipality, and has a mixture of different types of housing. This includes apartment blocks, terraced housing, areas with single-family houses and allotments, plus the remaining part of the old Valby village, around which the district has formed, intermingled with past and present industrial sites. Ørestad
Ørestad () is a developing city area in Copenhagen, Denmark, on the island of Amager. The area was developed using the new town concept, closely linked with the M1 line of the Copenhagen Metro. Economically, income for the plan would be generated by selling the public-owned, unused land for development, thus financing the construction of the metro, and contrarily, metro access was deemed necessary for making development attractive. While the metro is the primary public transport access, the area is also served by the Øresund Line between Copenhagen and Malmö, the motorway E20 and close to Copenhagen Airport. Ørestad was originally planned to consist of four districts, however only three are developed: Ørestad Nord, the unbuilt Amager Fælled area (which will remain a nature reserve), Ørestad City and Ørestad Syd.
