Edwards is a dispersed rural community at the headwaters of Bear Brook in the Osgoode Ward of Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. According to the Canada 2011 Census, the surrounding blocks had a population of 346. Edwards was named in 1901 after William Cameron Edwards (1844-1921). Edwards was a lumberman, MP for Russell 1887 -1903 and a senator. Bear Brook (Ontario)
Bear Brook (french: ruisseau Bear) is a small stream in the municipalities of Clarence-Rockland and The Nation, United Counties of Prescott and Russell, and the city of Ottawa in eastern Ontario, Canada. It forms in the fields and forests just north of Edwards, and flows in a mostly eastern direction to its mouth as a left tributary of the South Nation River. Communities along the brook include Edwards, Carlsbad Springs, Bearbrook, Cheney, and Bourget. History In the mid 19th century, the Bear Brook was used by loggers for floating timber to sawmills, a few of which operated in Carlsbad Springs from 1854 to 1905. It was also used by settlers for transportation to their homesteads. However the brook was too small and dry in the summer, and its use for transportation was quickly discontinued upon completion of Russell Road. William Cameron Edwards
William Cameron Edwards (7 May 1844 – 17 September 1921) was a Canadian businessman and parliamentarian. He was born in Clarence Township in Russell County, Ontario, the son of William Edwards and Ann Cameron, received basic schooling in Ottawa at the District Grammar School Lisgar Alumni Association. A History of the Ottawa Collegiate Institute, 1843–1903. 1904. and, at a young age, began work in the timber industry at Thurso, Quebec. He founded W.C. Edwards & Company which built large sawmills at Rockland and New Edinburgh. Up until 1920, Edwards' company also operated a sawmill on the Petite-Nation River in Quebec at North Nation Mills, north of Plaisance. In 1885, he married Catherine Wilson. The New York and Ottawa Railway was a railway connecting Tupper Lake in northeastern New York to Ottawa, Ontario, via Ramsayville, Russell, Embrun, Finch and Cornwall. It became part of the New York Central Railroad system in 1913, although it was under the larger company's possession since the end of 1904. Vars is a compact rural community in Cumberland Ward in the east end of Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. Russell is a police village that is part of Russell Township in the United Counties of Prescott and Russell in Eastern Ontario, Canada. It is located immediately east of Ottawa, the city limits of which are just over 2km west of Russell. Ottawa's downtown core is about 40km (25mi) northwest of Russell.
