Eckernförde ( da, Egernførde, sometimes also , nds, Eckernför, sometimes also ) () is a German town in Schleswig-Holstein, Rendsburg-Eckernförde, on the coast of the Baltic Sea approximately 30 km north-west of Kiel. The population is about 23,000. Eckernförde is a popular tourist destination in northern Germany. Name The name of Eckernförde is of mixed origin, but derived from the name of a Danish castle formerly located near the current town, which is also reflected in the name of the town district of ''Borby.'' Eckernförde Bay
Eckernförde Bay (german: Eckernförder Bucht; da, Egernførde Fjord or Egernfjord) is a firth and a branch of the Bay of Kiel between the Danish Wahld peninsula in the south and the Schwansen peninsula in the north in the Baltic Sea off the lands of Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. The bay extends around deep into the land and is wide at its entrance where ''Booknis-Eck'' (municipality of ''Waabs'') and ''Danish-Nienhof'' (municipality of ''Schwedeneck'') mark the endpoints. The bay is up to deep. The border to the Kiel Fjord lies at the Bülk Lighthouse. The once forested Danish Wahld peninsula between Kiel Fjord and Eckernförde Bay constituted the borderland between the Saxons and the Danes until the Middle Ages. Kiel–Flensburg Railway
The Kiel–Flensburg railway is a single-track railway in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. The railway connects the city of Kiel on the Baltic Sea with Eckernförde and Flensburg. Travel time over the railway is around 75 minutes with a maximum speed of . Alignment The railway crosses three peninsulas: from Kiel, it crosses the Kiel Canal and then traverses the Dänischer Wohld to Eckernförde. From that town to the Schlei it crosses Schwansen. North of the Schlei, the line runs through the typical landscape of Angeln, the location of the station of Süderbrarup. At the end point, Flensburg, the original terminal was at the Kiel Station, directly in the harbour. Since the current Flensburg station was completed in 1927, the railway now terminates there, entering from the east. Rendsburg-Eckernförde (; da, Rendsborg-Egernførde) is a district in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. It is bounded by (from the east and clockwise) the city of Kiel, the district of Plön (district), Plön, the city of Neumünster, the districts of Segeberg, Steinburg, Dithmarschen and Schleswig-Flensburg, and the Baltic Sea. History In 1867 the Prussian administration established twenty districts in its province of Schleswig-Holstein, among them the districts of Rendsburg and Eckernförde. The present district was established in 1970 by merging the former districts. Waldemar Behn or simply called BEHN is an alcoholic beverage family company (Gesellschaft mit beschränkter Haftung) based in Eckernförde, Germany. It was established in 1892 and is now run by the fourth generation. It's also a local wholesaler ("BEHN-Getränke") and a producer of convenience food (Austrian affiliate "Nannerl"). BEHN established its first own liqueur brands in the 1950s but had to wait until 1992 to create a nationally recognized brand with the party drink Kleiner Feigling. In 2013 they bought Danish vodka brand Danzka from the French Marie Brizard Wine & Spirits/Belvedere corporation. Danzka boasts the fourth biggest vodka sales in duty free shops world wide, it is the first major foray abroad. 1872 Baltic Sea Flood
The 1872 Baltic Sea flood (german: Ostseesturmhochwasser 1872), often referred to as a storm flood, ravaged the Baltic Sea coast from Denmark to Pomerania, also affecting Sweden, during the night between 12 and 13 November 1872 and was, until then, the worst storm surge in the Baltic. The highest recorded peak water level was about 3.3 m above sea level (NN). The First Schleswig War (german: Schleswig-Holsteinischer Krieg) was a military conflict in southern Denmark and northern Germany rooted in the Schleswig-Holstein Question, contesting the issue of who should control the Duchies of Schleswig, Holstein and Lauenburg. Ultimately, the Danish side proved victorious with the diplomatic support of the great powers. As the government, merchants, students, landowners and other upper class at the time spoke German, Low German was lingua franca in most of northern Europe at the time, the Germans claim it was mainly German-speaking areas, but the majority of the people were native Danish and Frisian speaking peasants and servants.
