1st Ubootgeschwader
The (English: 1st Submarine Squadron) is a submarine squadron of the German Navy. It is based at Eckernförde, Schleswig-Holstein, and forms part of '' Einsatzflottille 1'', headquartered in Kiel. History The ''1st Ubootgeschwader'' (1st UG) was set up on 1 October 1961 in Kiel. It was initially under the control of the , before it was subordinated to the newly established on 1 November. The 1st UG received its first submarine, the newly-commissioned Type 201 submarine ''U-1'', on 21 March 1962. The ''U-1'' was the first submarine constructed in post-war Germany. ''U-1''s sister ship, ''U-2'' followed in May 1962. The former R boat ''Merkur'' was assigned to the squadron as a support ship. The Type 201 submarines were eventually found to be unsatisfactory and were decommissioned early. ''Einsatzflottille 1'' (EinsFltl 1 or EF 1) is one of the three brigade-level units of the German Navy, in addition to ''Einsatzflottille 2'' and the Naval Air Command. It is based in Kiel, Schleswig-Holstein, and is under the head of the Navy Command, based in Rostock. History ''Einsatzflottille 1'' was set up on 29 June 2006 as part of a major reorganization of the fleet. The , the , and the were merged. ''U-31'' (S181) is a Type 212A submarine of the German Navy, and the lead ship of her class. ''U-31'' was built by TKMS, with construction taking place at the shipyards of Thyssen Nordseewerke of Emden and Howaldtswerke at Kiel. Launched on 20 March 2002, ''U-31'' was commissioned alongside her sister ship ''U-32'' by German Minister of Defence Peter Struck in Eckernförde on 19 October 2005. ''U-31'' is propelled by one diesel engine and an electric motor driven by nine fuel cells, making the submarine virtually undetectable. Elbe-class Replenishment Ship
The Type 404 ''Elbe''-class replenishment ships of the German Navy were built to support its squadrons of Fast Attack Craft, submarines and minesweeper/hunters, as such they are usually referred to as tenders. The ships carry fuel, fresh water, food, ammunition and other matériel. They also have a medical station aboard but doctors are not part of their standard complement and will have to be flown in. The tender also manage waste disposal for the ships they support at sea and can carry out minor repairs of assigned ships. For this purpose ''Elbe''-class tenders assigned to fast attack craft squadrons, for example, carry the SUG repair and support shop specialized for these boats on their deck in a set of 13 standard containers. ''Alster'' (A 50) is an intelligence ship of the German Navy. She is the lead ship of the German Navy's Type 423. The vessel is named for the river Alster located in Hamburg and Schleswig-Holstein. Oste-class Fleet Service Ship
The Type 423 ''Oste'' class are purpose built signals intelligence (SIGINT/ELINT) and reconnaissance ships of the German Navy. Officially designated as "fleet service ships", they replaced the Type 422 class. Accommodation for the crew was designed to civil standards, and the ''Oste'' class offers much more comfort for the crew than other ships in the German Navy.
