Extra Moenia
Extra moenia (also: extra muros) is a Latin phrase that means ''outside the walls'' or ''outside the walls of the city''. The phrase is commonly used in reference to the original attributes of a building, usually a church, which was built outside the original city walls. Hence, when a city expands over time, a church which was originally outside the walls might end up in the center of the larger city; subsequently, to retain the original architectural context, it would be referred to as ''extra moenia''. The term is also used to indicate an occurrence or activity taking place outside the venue where it would normally be found or reside. San Gennaro Extra moenia, extra Moenia ("San Gennaro Beyond the Walls") is a church in Naples, Italy. It is located in the Rione Sanita on the large road that leads up to the Museo Nazionale di Capodimonte, Capodimonte museum and is an example of so-called paleo-Christian architecture in the city. The foundation of the church is connected with the Catacombs of San Gennaro, the largest Christian catacomb complex in southern Italy. The first structure was probably the result of the fusion of two ancient burial sites, one from the 2nd century CE that contained the remains of Saint Agrippinus of Naples, the first patron saint of Naples, and the site from the 4th century CE that contained the remains of San Gennaro, the now traditional patron saint of the city. Santa Maria Extra Moenia (St Mary Outside the Walls), also called ''Santa Maria della Nave'' is an early Romanesque-style, Roman Catholic church complex located just outside to the South-West of the town of Antrodoco, province of Rieti, region of Lazio, central Italy. The complex includes a church and attached bell-tower with an adjacent but separate baptistry. History A paleochristian church at the site was built here in the 5th century, putatively atop an Ancient Roman temple dedicated to Diana. The site then was adjacent to a Christian cemetery, but the present cemetery is now separated railroad tracks and the SS4 highway. The structures underwent various restorations including in the 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th centuries. San Pietro extra moenia is an ancient Roman Catholic church in Spoleto, Umbria, Italy. Remarkable examples of Romanesque sculpture adorn the facade. The term ''extra moenia'' refers to its location outside the city walls. The site was once an ancient cemetery, but a church dedicated to St Peter existed by the 5th-century, to house the chains that supposedly once bound the saint. The present structure was built between the 12th and 13th centuries. The facade is floridly decorated with ornamental figures, animals, and reliefs.
