Evan B. Goss
Evan Benson Goss (December 8, 1872 – March 23, 1930) was an American judge who served as a justice of the Supreme Court of North Dakota from 1911 to 1916. Biography Evan B. Goss was born on December 8, 1872, in Michigan. Many years later he attended the University of Michigan. In 1894, he received his law degree and a master's degree the next year. He practiced law briefly in Grand Rapids before moving to Bottineau, North Dakota. He opened a law office in Bottineau and practiced there for several years. During this time, he served two terms as the State's Attorney of Bottineau County. In 1904, he was elected Judge of the Eighth Judicial District. In the 1910 election, he defeated Justice Sidney E. Ellsworth for a spot on the North Dakota Supreme Court. In 1916, he was defeated in his attempt for reelection. Richard Grace (judge)
Richard Grace (November 8, 1868 – February 9, 1929) was an American lawyer and judge who served on the North Dakota Supreme Court from 1918 through 1922. Early life and education Grace was born near Palmyra, Illinois on November 8, 1868. His early education took place in country schools. At the age of fifteen, his education was interrupted for several years following the death of his father. He later studied the preliminary requirements that allowed him to be admitted to Bushnell College near Peoria, Illinois. He attended Bushnell college for three years. Between 1889 and 1893 he studied law at a legal office in Springfield, Illinois while working as a teacher. He moved to Morris, Minnesota in 1893, and studied law at a legal office there while continuing to teach. Legal and judicial careers In 1895, Grace was admitted to the Minnesota Bar. The North Dakota Supreme Court is the highest court of law in the state of North Dakota. The Court rules on questions of law in appeals from the state's district courts. Each of the five justices are elected on a no-party ballot for ten year terms, arranged such that one seat is contested every two years. The Chief Justice is elected from the Justices every five years (or upon vacancy) by vote of the Supreme Court justices and the District Court judges. The Supreme Court is empowered to constitute a Court of Appeals consisting of a three-member panel chosen from active and retired District Court judges, retired Supreme Court justices, and lawyers. Bottineau is a city in Bottineau County, North Dakota, United States. It is the county seat of Bottineau County and is located just over south of the Canada–United States border. Bottineau County is a county in the U.S. state of North Dakota. As of the 2020 census, the population was 6,379. Its county seat is Bottineau. The Territorial legislature identified Bottineau as one of the original counties of the territory. on January 4, 1873. Its organization was effected on July 17, 1884.
