North Dakota Supreme Court
The North Dakota Supreme Court is the highest court of law in the state of North Dakota. The Court rules on questions of law in appeals from the state's district courts. Each of the five justices are elected on a no-party ballot for ten year terms, arranged such that one seat is contested every two years. The Chief Justice is elected from the Justices every five years (or upon vacancy) by vote of the Supreme Court justices and the District Court judges. The Supreme Court is empowered to constitute a Court of Appeals consisting of a three-member panel chosen from active and retired District Court judges, retired Supreme Court justices, and lawyers. The Court of Appeals only hears cases specifically assigned to it by the Supreme Court, which is done only infrequently. Under Article 6, Section 4 of the North Dakota Constitution, The North Dakota Supreme Court "shall not declare a legislative enactment unconstitutional unless at least four of the members of the court so decide." ...

Richard Grace (judge)
Richard Grace (November 8, 1868 – February 9, 1929) was an American lawyer and judge who served on the North Dakota Supreme Court from 1918 through 1922. Early life and education Grace was born near Palmyra, Illinois on November 8, 1868. His early education took place in country schools. At the age of fifteen, his education was interrupted for several years following the death of his father. He later studied the preliminary requirements that allowed him to be admitted to Bushnell College near Peoria, Illinois. He attended Bushnell college for three years. Between 1889 and 1893 he studied law at a legal office in Springfield, Illinois while working as a teacher. He moved to Morris, Minnesota in 1893, and studied law at a legal office there while continuing to teach. Legal and judicial careers In 1895, Grace was admitted to the Minnesota Bar. John Burke (North Dakota Politician)
John Burke (February 25, 1859 – May 14, 1937) was an American lawyer, jurist, and political leader from North Dakota who served as the 10th governor of North Dakota from 1907 to 1913, and later served as the 24th treasurer of the United States under President Woodrow Wilson. Following his term as treasurer, he subsequently served intermittently as Chief Justice of the North Dakota Supreme Court first from 1929-1931, then from 1935 until his death in 1937. Sveinbjörn Johnson (July 10, 1883 – March 16, 1946) was an Icelandic-born American lawyer, politician and scholar. Biography Johnson was born at Hólar in the Skagafjörður district of northern Iceland on July 10, 1883, the oldest of ten children born to John and Gudbjorn Johnson. William L. Nuessle (May 5, 1878 – March 30, 1959) was a justice of the North Dakota Supreme Court from 1923 to December 31, 1950. He first won election to court in 1922.
