European Renju Championship
The European Renju Championship is an official Renju championship organized by the Renju International Federation (RIF). It was started in 1994. History The first European Championship was held in 1994 in Tallinn, Estonia. In 1995, it was decided by the General Assembly of the Renju International Federation (RIF) that the European Championships would be held regularly. In the same year, the 2nd European Championship was held in Saint Petersburg, Russia. Since 1996, the European Championship was changed to happen once every two years. Tournament system Over the years, the tournament was held in different ways. In 1994 and 1995, the Swiss system was used. Renju
''Renju'' (Japanese: 連珠) is a professional variant of gomoku. It was named renju by Japanese journalist Ruikou Kuroiwa (黒岩涙香) on December 6, 1899 in a Japanese newspaper ''Yorozu chouhou'' (萬朝報). The name "renju" comes from the Japanese language, and means "connected pearls" in Japanese. The game is played with black and white stones on a 15×15 gridded go board. The rule of renju weakens the advantages for the first player (Black) in gomoku by adding special restrictions for Black. Rules Opening rules Unlike gomoku, renju has a unique sequence of opening moves called an "opening rule". There are several certified opening rules. Çanakkale (pronounced ), ancient ''Dardanellia'' (), is a city and seaport in Turkey in Çanakkale province on the southern shore of the Dardanelles at their narrowest point. Tunnet Taimla (21 June 1988 – 9 February 2023) was an Estonian Renju player. Career Taimla started to play Renju in 1995 at the age of 7. After four years of studying, he won the Youth European Championship (1999) among boys 14 years and under. Later, he won the Youth European Championship twice, in 2001 (among boys 14 years and under) and in 2005 (among boys 18 years and under). In 2002 he achieved the title of Youth World Champion (among boys 14 years and under). Since childhood he has taken part in adult tournaments as well, eventually managing to achieve significant results.
