European Democracy (Cyprus)
European Democracy (Greek: Evropaiki Dimokratia, EvroDi) was a political party in Cyprus founded in 2004 out of the coalition For Europe. For Europe (Greek: Για την Ευρώπη, Gia tin Evropi, GTE) was launched by Yiannakis Matsis to contest the 2004 European Parliamentary Elections. Yiannakis Matsis was a former (1993-1997) President of the center-right party Democratic Rally (DISY), but disagreed with the party's support for the Annan Plan and decided to fight the elections on a separate ticket. He was joined by deputies Rikkos Erotokritou and Prodromos Prodromou who had been expelled from DISY for opposing the party line on the Annan Plan. The coalition received 36,112 votes (10.8%) and Matsis was elected as an MEP by a margin of just 37 votes. He subsequently joined the group of the European People's Party-European Democrats (EPP-ED). 2004 European Parliament Election In Cyprus
An election took place on 13 June 2004 for MEPs representing Cyprus constituency for the 2004–2009 term of the European Parliament. It was part of the wider 2004 European election. This was the first time Cypriot voters had elected members of the European Parliament. They were election of the six deputies who would be representing the Republic of Cyprus at the European Parliament. The number of registered voters was 483,311 – out of which 503 were Turkish Cypriots and 2054 EU nationals – while the total number of people who voted was 350.387 or 72,50% of the registered voters. The number of polling stations was 1077, allocated to each polling district in the following manner: Nicosia 416, Limassol 323, Famagusta (Republic of Cyprus-administered area) 50, Larnaca 169 and Paphos 119. The Democratic Rally ( el, Δημοκρατικός Συναγερμός, translit=Dimokratikós Sinagermós, ΔΗΣΥ/DISY) is a liberal-conservative, Christian-democratic political party in Cyprus led by Averof Neofytou. The party was founded on 4 July 1976 by veteran politician Glafcos Clerides. Clerides served as the president of Cyprus from 1993 until 2003. European Party (Cyprus)
The European Party (Greek: Evropaiko Komma, Ευρωπαϊκό Κόμμα; abbreviated Ευρωκό, "Evroko") was a political party in Cyprus founded in 2005, largely out of the parties New Horizons and European Democracy. In March 2016, it dissolved to merge into the Solidarity Movement. The two predecessors were considered the most nationalist, anti-Turkish and anti-immigrant among Greek Cypriot parties. Evroko had a hard-line stance on the Cyprus problem, rejecting any compromise with Turkey or the Turkish-dominated Northern Cyprus, as proposed by the Annan Plan for Cyprus. It supported European integration and maintaining Greek influence in Cyprus. The party supported free market economic policies similar to that of Democratic Rally and the Democratic Party.
