White People
White is a racialized classification of people and a skin color specifier, generally used for people of European origin, although the definition can vary depending on context, nationality, and point of view. Description of populations as "White" in reference to their skin color predates this notion and is occasionally found in Greco-Roman ethnography and other ancient or medieval sources, but these societies did not have any notion of a White or pan-European race. The term "White race" or "White people", defined by their light skin among other physical characteristics, entered the major European languages in the later seventeenth century, when the concept of a "unified White" achieve universal acceptance in Europe, in the context of racialized slavery and unequal social status in the European colonies. Scholarship on race distinguishes the modern concept from pre-modern descriptions, which focused on physical complexion rather than race. Prior to the modern era, no Europe ... Afro-Caribbean
Afro-Caribbean people or African Caribbean are Caribbean people who trace their full or partial ancestry to Sub-Saharan Africa. The majority of the modern African-Caribbeans descend from Africans taken as slaves to colonial Caribbean via the trans-Atlantic slave trade between the 15th and 19th centuries to work primarily on various sugar plantations and in domestic households. Other names for the ethnic group include Black Caribbean, Afro or Black West Indian or Afro or Black Antillean. The term Afro-Caribbean was not coined by Caribbean people themselves but was first used by European Americans in the late 1960s. People of Afro-Caribbean descent today are largely of West African ancestry, and may additionally be of other origins, including European, South Asian and native Caribbean descent, as there has been extensive intermarriage and unions among the peoples of the Caribbean over the centuries. Although most Afro-Caribbean people today continue to live in English, Frenc ... [...More Info...]       [...Related Items...]     OR:     [Wikipedia]   [Google]   [Baidu]   |

Portuguese Trinidadian And Tobagonian
Portuguese Trinidadians and Tobagonians are the descendants of emigrants from Portugal to Trinidad and Tobago. History Trinidad and Tobago saw four major waves of migration from Portugal. Portuguese came to both Tobago and Trinidad as early as the 17th century: some landed in Trinidad in the 1630s. The groups that arrived in Tobago in the 1660s included Portuguese Jews. In fact, some of the Portuguese surnames found in Trinidad and Tobago are generally associated with the marrano community. The emigration continued in the 19th century; in fact some Portuguese landed in Trinidad in 1811 while others (mainly Azoreans) arrived in 1834. They were the first Portuguese-Caribbean labourers. The historical background to the second wave, which began in 1846, was an earlier influx of Azorean and Madeiran workers in 1834 following the British abolition of slavery the previous year, along with Scottish Presbyterian evangelism in Madeira in the early 1840s. White Trinidadians And Tobagonians
White Trinidadians and Tobagonians (sometimes Euro-Trinidadians and Tobagonians or local-whites) are Trinidadians of European descent. However, while the term White Trinidadian is used to refer collectively to all Caucasians who are Trinidadian, whether by birth or naturalization, the term local-white is used to refer more specifically to Trinidad-born Caucasians and in particular, those who trace their roots back to Trinidad's early settlers. White Trinidadians and Tobagonians account for less than 1% of the population of Trinidad and Tobago. However, the classification is primarily a superficial description based on phenotypic description opposed to genotypical classification. Most white Trinidadians and Tobagonians are of Portuguese stock. Trinidad and Tobago was colonized by the Spanish, the French and the British. History The first Europeans to discover and settle in Trinidad and Tobago were the Spanish. Trinidad was originally a Spanish colony and was under Spanish rule. U ...
