EuroBasket 2017 Qualification
This article describes the qualification procedure for EuroBasket 2017. Qualification format All teams which didn't qualify yet for EuroBasket 2017 were divided into six groups of four teams and one more of three. The winners of each group and the four best second-placed teams qualified for the final tournament. Kosovo made its first international appearance while Albania and Cyprus came back to the competition after absenting from the last edition. Russian Basketball Federation was suspended by FIBA in July 2015, but later their membership was restored in November 2015. Seedings In the qualifying round, 27 teams were drawn into six groups of four teams and one group of three teams. The winners of each group and the four best second-placed teams qualified for EuroBasket 2017. The games were played between 31 August and 17 September 2016. EuroBasket 2017
EuroBasket 2017 was the 40th edition of the EuroBasket championship that was organized by FIBA Europe and held between 31 August and 17 September 2017. Beginning from 2017, the continental championships take place every four years with a similar system of qualification as for the FIBA Basketball World Cup. Like the previous edition, the tournament was co-hosted by four countries. Games in the group stage were held in Turkey, Finland, Israel and Romania. The knock-out phase was played in Istanbul, Turkey. Slovenia won their first-ever tournament after defeating Serbia 93–85 in the final. Spain won the bronze medal by beating Russia with the same result. Host selection Following the decision to relocate the 2015 tournament, original hosts Ukraine were offered the chance to host the 2017 edition, but they declined, citing the ongoing unrest in the country. Laugardalshöll (; also known as Laugardalshöllin and Laugardalsholl Sport Center) is a multi-purpose sports and exhibition venue located in the Laugardalur district of Iceland's capital Reykjavík. The complex consists of two main venues, a sports hall and indoor arena for track and field athletics events. Opened on 4 December 1965, it hosts a variety of sporting events, such as handball, basketball, volleyball and athletics, as well as various other events as a general purpose venue. Jonathan Tabu (born 7 October 1985) is a Belgian professional basketball player who last played for Vanoli Cremona of the Italian Serie A2. Tabu also represents Belgium in international competition. Kevin Tumba (born February 23, 1991) is a Belgian-DR Congolese professional basketball player for Liège Basket of the BNXT League. He usually plays at the center position. Retin Obasohan (born 6 July 1993) is a Belgian professional basketball player for ASVEL of the French LNB Pro A and the EuroLeague. Early career In the 2010–11 season, Obasohan played for amateur team Kangoeroes Boom in the Belgian Second Division.
