Eumemmerring Province
Eumemmerring Province was an electorate of the Victorian Legislative Council. It existed as a two-member electorate from 1985 to 2006, with members holding alternating eight-year terms. It was a marginal seat throughout its existence, changing parties in the large landslide elections of 1992 and 2002. It was abolished from the 2006 state election in the wake of the Bracks Labor government's reform of the Legislative Council. It was located on the south-eastern fringe of Melbourne. Victorian Legislative Council
The Victorian Legislative Council (VLC) is the upper house of the bicameral Parliament of Victoria, Australia, the lower house being the Legislative Assembly. Both houses sit at Parliament House in Spring Street, Melbourne. The Legislative Council serves as a house of review, in a similar fashion to its federal counterpart, the Australian Senate. Although, it is possible for legislation to be first introduced in the Council, most bills receive their first hearing in the Legislative Assembly. The presiding officer of the chamber is the President of the Legislative Council. The Council presently comprises 40 members serving four-year terms from eight electoral regions each with five members. The Australian Labor Party (Victorian Branch), commonly known as Victorian Labor, is the semi-autonomous Victorian branch of the Australian Labor Party (ALP). The Victorian branch comprises two major wings: the parliamentary wing and the organisational wing. The parliamentary wing comprising all elected party members in the Legislative Assembly and Legislative Council, which when they meet collectively constitute the party caucus. The parliamentary leader is elected from and by the caucus, and party factions have a strong influence in the election of the leader. Adem Kubilay Somyurek (born 25 September 1967 in Izmir, Turkey) is an Australian politician. He has served as a member of the Victorian Legislative Council representing South Eastern Metropolitan Region since 2002. 1999 Victorian State Election
The 1999 Victorian state election, held on Saturday, 18 September 1999, was for the 54th Parliament of Victoria. It was held in the Australian state of Victoria to elect the 88 members of the state's Legislative Assembly and 22 members of the 44-member Legislative Council. The Liberal–National Coalition led by Jeff Kennett and Pat McNamara, which had held majority government since the 1996 election, lost 15 seats and its majority due mainly to a swing against it in rural and regional Victoria. The Labor Party, led by Steve Bracks, although also not having majority of the seats, took government due to support from three rural independents. Gordon Kenneth Rich-Phillips (born 8 July 1974) is a former Australian politician. The 1996 Victorian state election, held on Saturday, 30 March 1996, was for the 53rd Parliament of Victoria. It was held in the Australian state of Victoria to elect all 88 members of the state's Legislative Assembly and 22 members of the 44-member Legislative Council. The election took place four weeks after the 1996 federal election which swept the Labor Party from power nationally. The Liberal–National Coalition led by Jeff Kennett and Pat McNamara was returned for a second term. Ronald James Herbert "Ron" Wells (born 22 September 1935) is a former Australian politician. He was born in Cardiff, New South Wales, to Cecil Wells, a businessman, and Mildred, ''née'' Tombs. He received a Higher Diploma in Accounting (Honours) from the University of Western Sydney in 1954, a Bachelor of Veterinary Science (Honours) from Sydney University in 1959, a PhD from Cambridge University in 1964, and a Master of Veterinary Science from Melbourne University in 1970. Robert Stuart Ives (born 16 December 1938) is a former Australian politician. He was born in Kalgoorlie, Western Australia, and attended Eastern Goldfields High School. He graduated from the University of Western Australia in 1959 with a Bachelor of Arts (Honours), adding a Diploma of Education in 1960 and a Master of Arts in 1963. He worked as a teacher, and in 1965 moved to Melbourne, where he became a management consultant with BCA. Having joined the Labor Party in 1967, he was officer-in-charge of the Personnel Practice Section of the Commonwealth Department of Labour and National Service from 1972 to 1974. 1988 Victorian State Election
The 1988 Victorian state election, held on Saturday, 1 October 1988, was for the 51st Parliament of Victoria. It was held in the Australian state of Victoria to elect all 88 members of the state's Legislative Assembly and 22 members of the 44-member Legislative Council. The incumbent Labor Party government led by Premier John Cain Jr. won a third term in office, despite a swing against it, and only lost the seat of Warrandyte in Melbourne's north-east.
