Eugène Marquis
Eugène Marquis (11 September 1901 – 15 November 1994) was a Liberal party member of the House of Commons of Canada. He was born in Saint-Alexandre-de-Kamouraska, Quebec and became a crown attorney, judge and lawyer by career. Marquis was educated at Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupré, Sainte-Anne-de-la-Pocatière and at the Quebec Seminary. From February 1931 to July 1936, he was Crown Attorney for the District of Quebec, and served in that capacity again from November 1939 to September 1944. He was first elected to Parliament at the Kamouraska riding in the 1945 general election then re-elected in 1949. Saint-Alexandre-de-Kamouraska is a municipality in the Canadian province of Quebec, in the Kamouraska Regional County Municipality. Before July 5, 1997, it was known simply as Saint-Alexandre. History The parish of Saint-Alexandre was founded in the first half of the 19th century. It was canonically erected in 1851. The post office was first opened in 1854 under the name "''Saint-Alexandre-de-Kamouraska''". The parish municipality of Saint-Alexandre was then created in 1855. In 1997, its status was changed to a municipality alongside its name, which became ''Saint-Alexandre-de-Kamouraska''. Kamouraska (federal Electoral District)
Kamouraska was a federal electoral district in Quebec, Canada, that was represented in the House of Commons of Canada from 1869 to 1979. It was created by the ''British North America Act'', 1867. There was no election in 1867 due to riots. There was a by-election held in 1869 in its place. The district was abolished in 1976 when it was redistributed into Bellechasse, Kamouraska—Rivière-du-Loup and Rimouski ridings. Crown attorneys or crown counsel (or, in Alberta and New Brunswick, crown prosecutors) are the prosecutors in the legal system of Canada. Crown attorneys represent the Crown and act as prosecutor in proceedings under the Criminal Code and various other statutes. Criminal prosecutions pursuant to federal statutes other than the Criminal Code, such as the ''Controlled Drugs and Substances Act'', the '' Income Tax Act'', and others, are generally (but not exclusively) conducted by the Public Prosecution Service of Canada, which also handles most narcotic case outside of Quebec and New Brunswick. 1945 Canadian Federal Election
The 1945 Canadian federal election was held on June 11, 1945, to elect members of the House of Commons of the 20th Parliament of Canada. Prime Minister William Lyon Mackenzie King's Liberal government was re-elected to its third consecutive term, although this time with a minority government as the Liberals fell five seats short of a majority. Since 1939, Canada had been fighting in World War II. In May 1945, the war in Europe ended, allowing King to call an election. As the war in Asia was still raging on, King promised a voluntary force to fight in Operation Downfall, the planned invasion of Japan, while Progressive Conservative Party (PC Party) leader John Bracken promised conscription, which was an unpopular proposal and led to the PCs' third consecutive defeat. 1949 Canadian Federal Election
The 1949 Canadian federal election was held June 27, 1949 to elect members of the House of Commons of Canada of the 21st Parliament of Canada. The Liberal Party of Canada was re-elected with its fourth consecutive government, winning 191 seats (73 percent of the seats in the House of Commons), with just under 50 percent of the popular vote. It was the Liberals' first election in almost thirty years not under the leadership William Lyon Mackenzie King. King had retired in 1948, and was replaced as Liberal leader and Prime Minister by Louis St. Laurent. It was the first federal election with Newfoundland voting, having joined Canada in March of that year.
