Podemos (Spanish Political Party)
Podemos (, translated in English as "We Can"), * ca, Podem, * gl, Podemos, is a left-wing populist political party in Spain. Part of the anti-austerity movement in Spain, it was founded in January 2014 by political scientist Pablo Iglesias Turrión and other academics in the aftermath of the 15-M Movement protests against inequality and corruption. In the 2014 European Parliament election in Spain, Podemos won 8.0% of the vote and five seats. The newly founded party's big impact received significant media attention, having defied the odds and polls, while major parties lost out. By October 2014, Podemos was the second largest political party in Spain by number of members after the People's Party. Spain is a European Parliament constituency for elections in the European Union covering the member state of Spain. It is currently represented by 59 Members of the European Parliament and is the second largest European Parliament constituency in terms of geographic area after France, as well as the third most populated after Germany and France. Electoral system The constituency was created as per the 1985 Treaty of Accession and was first contested in the 1987 European election in Spain. The Treaty provided for Spain to be allocated 60 representatives within the European Parliament, but successive amendments to the Treaty on European Union and the Treaties establishing the European Communities have seen this number change: 64 under Council Decision 93/81/Euratom, ECSC, EEC and Amsterdam; 50 under Nice and 54 under Lisbon. Ernest Urtasun i Domènech (born 27 January 1982) is a Spanish ecosocialist politician and economist. He serves as Member of the European Parliament since 2014, integrated within the Greens–European Free Alliance (Greens/EFA) political group. Biography Born on 27 January 1982 in Barcelona, Urtasun joined , the youth wing of Initiative for Catalonia Greens (ICV), when he was 15 years old. He earned a licentiate degree in Economics from the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB), followed by a postgraduate degree in international relations from the University of Barcelona (UB). A Member of the European Parliament (MEP) is a person who has been elected to serve as a popular representative in the European Parliament. Below is a list of Member of the European Parliament, members of the European Parliament serving in the Ninth European Parliament, ninth term (2019–2024). It is sorted by list position or in cases of multiple constituencies, an English perception of surname treating all variations of de/di/do, Tussenvoegsel, van/von, Ó/Ní/Uí, and so forth as part of the collation key, even if this is not the normal practice in a member's own country. The term began on 2 July 2019 and ended on 15 July 2024.
