Ester Almqvist
Ester Dorothea Almqvist (3 November 1869 – 11 June 1934) was a Swedish artist who was a pioneer of Expressionist painting in Sweden. Family and education Almqvist was born in Bromma but spent her childhood in Stockholm, where her parents taught in a school for Christian missionaries. She is the female artist who is represented with most artworks in the collections of Malmö Konstmuseum, a total of 2,083 pieces. She had specified in her will that her collection of oil and watercolour paintings, charcoal, pastel and ink drawings, graphic pages and sketchbooks should be donated to that particular museum. Her father, a priest, died when she was nine. Her mother worked as a private tutor and book seller for the sake of providing for her family. Siri Karin Derkert (30August 188828April 1973) was a Swedish artist and sculptor. She was also a strong advocate for peace, feminism and environmental issues. Life and education Derkert was born on 30August 1888 in the parish of Adolf Fredrik Church in Stockholm. She was one of seven children of merchant Carl Edward Johansson Derkert and Emma Charlotta Valborg, born Fogelin. She received her first artistic education at the Caleb Althin school of art in Stockholm, where she started in 1904. She went on to the Royal Institute of Art in 1911–13. In 1913, Derkert moved to Paris where she studied at the Académie Colarossi and the Académie de la Grande Chaumière together with Swedish sculptors Ninnan Santesson and Lisa Bergstrand, until the start of World War I in the autumn of 1914. Mollie Faustman
Mollie Faustman (pseudonym, la Vagabonde; Stockholm, 1883 - Stockholm, 1966) was a Swedish painter, illustrator, journalist and author. Biography Originally from the district of Kungsholmen, Mollie Faustman was one of the three daughters of engineer Edvard Faustman and professor Alma Karsten. She studied with the Swedish artist Carl Wilhelmson at the Valand Art School in Gothenburg from 1905 to 1908. In 1910, she moved to Paris to complete her apprenticeship with Henri Matisse. Faustman married Gösta Törneqvist from 1910 to 1915, before marrying Gösta Chatham a second time from 1917 to 1926. They had two children, Tuttan Faustman-Hedberg (1917-1999), and Hampe Faustman (1919-1961). Vera Nilsson
Vera Amalia Märta Nilsson (1888–1979) was a Swedish painter and a peace activist. One of Sweden's most prominent Expressionists, she is remembered in particular for her paintings of children, including her daughter Ginga, and for her landscapes, often scenes of Öland where she spent her summers. Her anti-war sentiments are vividly expressed in ''Penning conta liv'', painted during the Spanish Civil War in 1939. In the 1960s, she painted works protesting nuclear war. Maja Fjæstad
Kerstin Maria (Maja) Fjæstad née Hallén (1873–1961) was a Swedish artist who was successful as a portrait painter, as well as a textile artist and an engraver. Together with her husband Gustaf Fjæstad, at the turn of the century she became an active member of the Rackstad Artists Colony in Värmland. In nearby Arvika, in 1922 she was one of twelve artists who established the crafts association which she chaired until 1948.
