Essendine
Essendine is a village and civil parish at the eastern end of the county of Rutland in the East Midlands of England, located 5 miles (7 km) north of Stamford, Lincolnshire, Stamford and 6 miles (10 km) south of Bourne, Lincolnshire, Bourne. The population of the civil parish at the 2011 census was 448. It lies on the River Glen, Lincolnshire, West Glen, close by the earthworks of a small castle. The village's name means 'valley of Esa'. Geology Most of the village is on Blisworth Limestone or Upper Estuarine Series geology, though the church and castle are on river alluvium. In the parish generally, the soils are shallow and well drained with limestone brash. There is some clay which is naturally rather poorly drained and occasionally waterlogged. Bourn And Essendine Railway
The Bourn and Essendine Railway (the town originally spelt "Bourn" (later Bourne)) was a seven mile long branch line which connected Bourne in Lincolnshire to the East Coast Main Line in the village of Essendine in Rutland. The line was opened in 1860; it was a single line and served the town of Bourne and the villages of Thurlby, Braceborough and Essendine. Its line ran through the ceremonial counties of Lincolnshire and Rutland in the East Midlands of England. There was originally talk of a through-line to connect with the Stamford and Essendine Railway, which was also at Essendine station. Had this have happened, it would have connected Bourne to Stamford at Stamford East station. This never happened and the line from Bourne to Essendine served as a stub. Essendine Railway Station
Essendine railway station was a station in Essendine, Rutland. It was situated on the East Coast Main Line of the Great Northern Railway. Overview The main line and the station opened in 1853. The Stamford and Essendine Railway branch line to Stamford and the line to Bourne were opened in 1856 and 1860. Due to its status as a junction, it was served by some express trains as well as by stopping trains. For many years a commuter train left King's Cross at around 5pm and terminated at Essendine, before returning the next morning. The Bourne branch closed in 1951. The Stamford branch closed in 1959 along with Essendine station itself and the Peterborough to Grantham local services. Peterborough to Grantham is the longest distance between adjacent stations in England. The 'South' Signal-box at Essendine was enlarged, not long after it was built, and by the time the station closed, had well over a hundred levers. Church Of St Mary Magdalene, Essendine
The Church of St Mary Magdalene is a church in Essendine, Rutland. It is a Grade II* listed building. History The small church is built within the remains of the castle, which appears to have been an early Norman bailey, later developing into a strongly fortified manor. The church is made up of a chancel and a nave dating to the 12th and 13th centuries. The church has no tower but does have a double bell-cote. The church has a notable Norman tympanum over its south door. The tympanum has a carving of Christ in Majesty with angels. The door of the church probably dates back to the 12th century but some suggest it is Anglo-Saxon. LNER Class A4 4468 ''Mallard'' is a 4-6-2 ("Pacific") steam locomotive built in 1938 for operation on the London and North Eastern Railway (LNER) at Doncaster Works to a design of Nigel Gresley. Bourne is a market town and civil parish in the South Kesteven district of Lincolnshire, England. River Glen, Lincolnshire
The River Glen is a river in Lincolnshire, England with a short stretch passing through Rutland near Essendine. The river's name appears to derive from a Brythonic Celtic language but there is a strong early English connection. Naming In the language of the Ancient Britons, which survives today as Welsh, Cornish and Breton, the neighbouring rivers, the Glen and the Welland seem to have been given contrasting names. The Welland flowed from the area underlain by the Northampton Sands which in many places are bound together by iron oxide to form ironstone. Class A4
The Class A4 is a class of streamlined 4-6-2 steam locomotive designed by Nigel Gresley for the London and North Eastern Railway in 1935. Their streamlined design gave them high-speed capability as well as making them instantly recognisable, and one of the class, 4468 ''Mallard'', holds the world record as the fastest steam locomotive.
