Ernest Woodford Birch
Sir Ernest Woodford Birch, Wright, Arnold, Twentieth Century Impressions of British Malaya: Its history, ''People'', commerce, industries and resources, 1908 (29 April 1857 – 17 December 1929) was a British colonial administrator who served as the eighth British resident of Perak (1904–1911). Family Sir Ernest was the eldest son of James Wheeler Woodford Birch. Although born in Trincomalee, Ceylon on 29 April 1857, he was sent to England at the age of 10 to stay with his grandfather, Rev. James Woodford Birch, Vicar of the All Saints, Hertford. In 1882, he married Margaret, the eldest daughter of Lawrence Niven, then Director of the Singapore Botanical Gardens. Sir Ernest and Lady Margaret had two sons and four daughters. In 1890 their eldest son drowned at Tanjung Kling, Malacca, aged only seven years old. Perak
Perak () is a state of Malaysia on the west coast of the Malay Peninsula. Perak has land borders with the Malaysian states of Kedah to the north, Penang to the northwest, Kelantan and Pahang to the east, and Selangor to the south. Malacca
Malacca ( ms, Melaka) is a state in Malaysia located in the southern region of the Malay Peninsula, next to the Strait of Malacca. Sir Cecil Clementi Smith (23 December 1840 – 6 February 1916),. was a British colonial administrator. Background The son of an Essex rector, John Smith, and his wife Cecilia Susanna Clementi (daughter of Muzio Clementi), Cecil Clementi Smith received his education at St Paul's School and Corpus Christi College, Cambridge. In 1864 he began his civil service career as a cadet interpreter in Hong Kong, learning much about the Chinese culture and gradually became an accomplished scholar of the Chinese culture. A strait is an oceanic landform connecting two seas or two other large areas of water. The surface water generally flows at the same elevation on both sides and through the strait in either direction. Most commonly, it is a narrow ocean channel that lies between two land masses.
