John Entwistle
John Alec Entwistle (9 October 194427 June 2002) was an English musician who was the bassist for the rock band The Who. Entwistle's music career spanned over four decades. Nicknamed "The Ox" and "Thunderfingers", he was the band's only member with formal musical training and also provided backing and occasional lead vocals. Entwistle was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of the Who in 1990. Renowned for his musical abilities, Entwistle's instrumental approach used pentatonic lead lines and a then-unusual treble-rich sound ("full treble, full volume"). He was voted as the greatest bassist ever in a 2011 ''Rolling Stone'' readers' poll and, in 2020, the same magazine ranked him number three in its own list of the 50 greatest bassists of all time. Millicent Lilian "Peg" Entwistle (5 February 1908 – 16 September 1932) was a British stage and screen actress. She began her stage career in 1925, appearing in several Broadway productions. She appeared in only one film, ''Thirteen Women'', which was released posthumously. Entwistle gained notoriety after she jumped to her death from atop the "H" on the Hollywoodland sign in September 1932, at the age of 24. Entwistle () is a hamlet in Alberta, Canada, within Parkland County. It is at the Yellowhead Highway's intersection with Highway 22/ Highway 16A, approximately west of Edmonton. Entwistle sits on the east banks of the Pembina River near the halfway point between Edmonton and Edson. Entwistle has grown to become a staging area for the oil and gas industry. It has an annual rodeo, the Pembina River Provincial Park, and calls itself the Diamond Capital of Canada. Entwistle is within the federal riding of Yellowhead, provincial electoral district of Lac Ste. Anne-Parkland and Parkland County's Division 6. Entwistle, Lancashire
Entwistle is a village in the Blackburn with Darwen unitary authority in Lancashire in the North West England, north west of England. Its name derives from the Old English ''ened'' and ''twisla'' which means a river fork frequented by ducks. The name was recorded as Hennetwisel in 1212, Ennetwysel in 1276 and Entwissell in 1311. Entwistle is situated in a fork between the Edgeworth Brook and a smaller tributary. Entwistle was originally a township in the chapelry of Turton Urban District, Turton which was part of the large ecclesiastical parish of Bolton le Moors in the hundred of Salford. Entwistle Hall is a 16th-century farmhouse which dates from the time of the Entwistle family. It is a Listed buildings in North Turton, Grade II listed building. Entwistle Railway Station
Entwistle railway station (first opened in 1848) is north of Bolton and serves the village of Entwistle. It is also the closest station to Edgworth. Unlike nearby the station lies outside the Transport for Greater Manchester boundary, meaning that passengers cannot take advantage of their special offers and ticketing. Owing to the remote location and low passenger numbers, Entwistle has been a request stop for several years, however since 21st May 2023, it is no longer a request stop, and all trains stop here. It is served by Northern services on the Rochdale/Bolton 'Ribble Valley' Line towards Blackburn and Clitheroe in England.
