Timothy John Entwisle
Timothy John Entwisle (born 1960), is an Australian botanist, much of whose research work is in phycology (algae). See for example the articles. He was awarded a Ph.D. from La Trobe University in 1986 for work on the taxonomy of ''Vaucheria''. He was New South Wales’ Government Botanist in 2007 and 2008, and for eight years was the executive director of the Royal Botanic Gardens Sydney (2003–2011). Subsequently, he was director of Conservation, Living Collections and Estates, Kew, London from 2011, and since 2013 he has been director of the Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria. He is an honorary professorial fellow at the University of Melbourne and is currently (2020) president of the International Association of Botanic Gardens. Gertrude Lilian Entwisle
Gertrude Lilian Entwisle (12 June 1892 – 18 November 1961) was an electrical engineer. She was the first British woman to retire from a complete career in industry as a professional engineer; the first female engineer to work at British Westinghouse; and the first female student, graduate, and associate member of the Institution of Electrical Engineers (now the Institution of Engineering and Technology). Entwisle was known for her work on designing DC motors and exciters. Her obituary said she broke "barriers of prejudice to become a respected designer of electrical rotating machinery." Peter Entwisle
Peter Malcolm William Entwisle (20 September 1948 – 14 March 2018) was a New Zealand art historian and writer, notably on the history of Dunedin and of New Zealand art. Early life Entwisle's parents both worked within the book industry. His father, Arnold, had been born in Cheshire, and moved to London where he worked as a buyer for a bookshop. Here he met Mary Crabb, who worked at Hogarth Press for Leonard Woolf. They married in 1936. William Entwisle
William Entwisle (30 September 1808 – 18 August 1865) was a British Conservative politician. Born in Manchester, Entwisle was the fourth son of Richard Entwisle. At age 19, he was admitted as a pensioner at Trinity College, Cambridge before matriculating in Michaelmas in 1827, and then becoming a scholar in 1830. He graduated as a Bachelor of Arts and as 20th wrangler in 1831, and as a Master of Arts in 1834. He was also admitted to Lincoln's Inn in 1831, and was called to the Bar in 1836. He became an honorary Doctor of Civil Law at the University of Oxford in 1844, and was also a chairman of the Manchester and Leeds Railway Company, and a partner at banking firm Loyd, Entwisle, Bury and Jervis, now part of the Royal Bank of Scotland. At some point, he married Hannah Loyd, daughter of Edward Loyd, a banker at the firm, and they had at least one son, named William. Joseph Entwisle
Joseph Entwisle (1767–1841), was an English Methodist minister. Life Entwistle was the second son of William Entwisle and his wife, Ellen Makin, who were members of a presbyterian church in Manchester, and was born there on 15 April 1767, one of five sons who grew up to manhood. He was taught at the free school connected with the old presbyterian chapel in Manchester. At the age of fourteen Entwisle joined the Methodists, and made use of a good library at the preacher's house in Oldham Street. When not quite sixteen he began to preach, and was known as 'the boy preacher.' John Wesley called him out to the itinerant work, and in 1787 sent him to the Oxfordshire circuit. Four years after, at the Manchester conference, he was received into the full ministry while stationed in Halifax. During the next few years Entwisle laboured in Leeds, Wakefield, Hull, Macclesfield, Manchester, Liverpool, and London, winning apopularity by his preaching power. Bertine Entwisle Sutton
Air Marshal Sir Bertine Entwisle Sutton, (17 December 1886 – 28 September 1946) was a pilot in the Royal Flying Corps during the First World War and a senior officer in the Royal Air Force from the 1920s to the 1940s. Early life Bertine Sutton was born in Kensington, the son of the Reverend Alfred Sutton and his wife Bertha Frances Entwisle, and grandson of James Sutton of Shardlow. He was educated at Eton and University College, Oxford from where he gained his Bachelor of Arts in 1908. After graduation, Sutton worked in a solicitor's office in London until he was employed by Hutchinson the publishing company. Sutton had aimed to become a lawyer but the outbreak of the First World War resulted in him entering the Army. The Venerable Edmund Entwisle, D.D. (28 April 1660 – 15 September 1707) was an Anglican clergyman. Entwisle was born at Ormskirk. He was educated at Brasenose College, Oxford. He became the rector of Barrow in 1691. He was also chaplain to Bishop Thomas Stratford, bishop of Chester and a canon of Chester Cathedral, .
