Gertrude Elles
Gertrude Lilian Elles MBE (8 October 1872 – 18 November 1960) was a British geologist, known for her work on graptolites. Personal life Gertrude Elles was born on October 8, 1872. She was the youngest of six children. Every year the Elles family would travel to the Morenish Estate near Killen to hunt. The young Gertrude fell in love with Scotland, especially the Highlands, during these family vacations. Elles' love for geology evolved through exploration of the outdoors, museum visits, and fieldtrips. Her first introduction to a formal education in geology were classes she took in 1887 at Wimbledon High School which she attended. Dr. Elles' adult life is marked by her dedication to the contribution of knowledge to the field of Geology. Diana Elles, Baroness Elles
Diana Louie Elles, Baroness Elles (19 July 1921 – 17 October 2009) was a barrister and United Nations representative from the United Kingdom. She was a delegate to the European Parliament for over a decade. Her son is James Elles. Early years Born Diana Newcombe in Bedford, she was the daughter of Colonel Stewart Francis Newcombe and his wife Elisabeth Chaki, who he had met in his war captivity. Her father was a close friend of T.E.Lawrence, who was the godfather of her brother Stuart Lawrence Newcombe (born 1920). After education at private schools in London, Paris and Florence, she went to the University of London, where she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in French and Italian in 1941. Bertram Walter Elles
Bertram Walter Elles (3 July 1877 – 1963) of Wimbledon, London and was the son of Jamieson Elles. On 24 February 1906, Bertham married Jean Challoner Lake daughter of Cannon Henry Lake at Saint Mary Abbots, Kensington. Upon his retirement, the Elles lived in Hartfield, Sussex. Education Bertram received his education at Marlborough College and later admitted King's College on 2 October 1896, where he had a Bachelor of Arts in 1899. In 1903, he passed his Malay language. Edmond Elles
Lieutenant-General Sir Edmond Roche Elles (9 June 18486 January 1934) was a British Army officer who served in Egypt and India during the late 19th century and early 20th century. Military career Elles entered the Royal Artillery in 1867 and was promoted to Colonel in 1891. He was Assistant Quartermaster-General at Headquarters in India (intelligence branch) when he was in November 1893 appointed Deputy Quartermaster-General Bengal. Lieutenant General Sir Hugh Jamieson Elles (27 May 1880 – 11 July 1945) was a British officer and the first commander of the newly formed Tank Corps during the First World War. Early life Born in British India on 27 May 1880, Hugh Jamieson Elles was the younger son of Sir Edmond Alles. Returning to England, he was educated at Clifton College, and the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich, after which he was commissioned as a second lieutenant into the Royal Engineers in June 1899. James Edmund Moncrieff Elles (born 3 September 1949 in London) is a former Conservative Party Member of the European Parliament (MEP) for South East England. Elles is the son of Diana Newcombe Elles, Baroness Elles and her husband, Neil Patrick Moncrieff Elles. He served as the MEP for Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire from 1984 to 1994, and following boundary changes for Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire East from 1994 to 1999.
