''Elizabeth Refuses'' is a 1957 Australian TV play based on the 1813 novel ''Pride and Prejudice'' by Jane Austen. It was directed by William Sterling. It was performed live from Sydney on 5 February 1957. The adaptation was written by English writer Margaret Macnamara of a number of scenes from Jane Austen's novel. It ran for 30 minutes on the ABC. Plot In the Bennet house, Mrs Bennet wishes for her two sisters, Elizabeth and Jane, to be married. Mr Collins, a clergyman, arrives seeking a bride. Lady Catherine de Bourgh hints at future happiness for Elizabeth. Elizabeth rejects Mr Collins' proposal. Pride And Prejudice
''Pride and Prejudice'' is an 1813 novel of manners by Jane Austen. The novel follows the character development of Elizabeth Bennet, the dynamic protagonist of the book who learns about the repercussions of hasty judgments and comes to appreciate the difference between superficial goodness and actual goodness. Mr. Bennet, owner of the Longbourn estate in Hertfordshire, has five daughters, but his property is Fee tail, entailed and can only be passed to a male heir. His wife also lacks an inheritance, so his family faces becoming poor upon his death. William Sterling (director)
William Sterling (born 14 September 1926) was an Australian producer and director. He was born in Sydney, New South Wales. Biography Sterling was born in Sydney, one of two brothers. When his father was killed during World War II, Sterling left school to work in a chartered accountant's office. He served in the Royal Australian Navy then did a Bachelor of Arts at Sydney University, with Honours in English and History. He was going to be a teacher but then got a job as liaison officer between the ABC and the Department of Education. He began writing and producing radio plays, and in 1956 moved into directing television at the ABC. He moved to Melbourne in 1957. He originally directed all sorts of programs for the ABC but in October 1959 was assigned to drama full time. Audrey Rogers was his assistant. Margaret Macnamara (playwright)
Margaret Macnamara (born Margaret Mary Mack; 1874 – 1950) was a British playwright and suffragist whose work promoted feminist, pacifist and socialist values and opposition to eugenics. Biography Macnamara was born Margaret Mary Mack in 1874, later changing her name to Macnamara. Her parents were James Andrew Mack and Margaret Mack (née Norris) and she was the eldest of six children. The family lived at various places in Kent and Sussex. Macnamara and her sister Helena Mack took on domestic and childcare responsibilities in the home and cared for their elderly parents. Helena was supported financially by an aunt to attend university which left Macnamara resentful that she had not been given the same opportunity. Helena also wrote and produced plays. Thelma May Afford (née Thomas) (1 December 1907 – 21 August 1996) was an Australian costume designer, theatre performer, and fashion journalist who worked in Adelaide, Melbourne, and Sydney. Biography Early years Afford was born Thelma Thomas in Broken Hill, New South Wales to William James Thomas and Ethel (née Henderson) in 1907. Her parents moved to Adelaide, where she attended the Presbyterian Girls' College, Glen Osmond. There she studied drawing and design, and became an art teacher at the South Australian School of Arts and Crafts. She acted between 1932 and 1934, then moved to Melbourne in 1934 to further study at Technical College.
