Eliza Pickrell Routt
Eliza Pickrell Routt (1839–1907) was a pioneer in women's suffrage and the original first lady of the state of Colorado. Early years Eliza Franklin Pickrell was born in Springfield, Illinois in 1839 to Mary Ann Elkin and Benjamin Franklin Pickrell. Both of her parents were from Kentucky. She was orphaned early in her childhood and then lived at the home of her grandfather Colonel William Franklin Elkins. Along with Abraham Lincoln, he was one of the "Long Nine" who averaged six feet tall and represented Sangamon County, Illinois between 1836 and 1837 in the legislature. She received a good education, which involved study abroad and travel. In 1874, she married Colonel John Long Routt, who was the second assistant Postmaster-General. The Colorado Women's Hall of Fame is a non-profit, volunteer organization that recognizes women who have contributed to the history of the U.S. state of Colorado. As of 2020, 170 women have been inducted. History There was a short-lived recognition program established in Colorado in 1965 to honor the contributions of women to the state, known as the Colorado Women of Achievement awards. Each year, three honorees from throughout the state who had distinguished themselves in their profession or avocation were recognized at an annual banquet held in Denver, given a cash award, and received a pin with the emblem of the program, which was sponsored by the Columbia Savings and Loan Association. John Long Routt
John Long Routt (April 25, 1826 – August 13, 1907) was an Americans, American politician of the Republican Party. Born in Eddyville, Kentucky, he served as the List of governors of Colorado, first and seventh governor of Colorado from 1876 to 1879 and 1891 to 1893. He also served as mayor of Denver, Colorado from 1883 to 1885. He died in Denver, Colorado. Early years John Long Routt was born in Eddyville, Kentucky, and moved to Bloomington, Illinois shortly thereafter where he completed his public school education. Upon completion of his studies, he worked as a carpenter prior to entering elected office. While living in Illinois, he attained his first elected office as Sheriff of McLean County, Illinois.
