Eleazar Swalmius
Eleazar Swalmius or Eleasar Swalmius (1582 – June 4, 1652) was a Dutch theologian known today for his portrait by Rembrandt. Swalmius was born in Rhoon as the son of Hendrick van de Swalme, or Henricus Swalmius, who was probably born in Flanders and spent time in England before becoming a preacher in Rhoon in 1580. It was in Rhoon that he changed his name from Swalme to Swalmius. Swalmius the Elder had 4 sons: #Arnoldus, who became a preacher in Westmaas, 's Gravesande # Hendrik the younger, who married Judith van Breda in 1600 and became preacher of Oud-Alblas and later of the Grote Kerk, Haarlem in 1625 # Carel (1587-1640) who became a dike-reeve in IJzendijke # This Eleazar, who after being a preacher in Amsterdam for 25 years was portrayed by Rembrandt (or someone in his studio). The Preacher Eleazar Swalmius
''The Preacher Eleazar Swalmius'' is a 1637 oil-on-canvas painting by the Dutch artist Rembrandt. It is currently owned by the Royal Museum of Fine Arts in Antwerp. The painting has been certified a real Rembrandt. The painting was listed in 1727 in the catalog of the Duke of Orléans collection, as a portrait of an Amsterdam mayor by Rembrandt. It remained in the noble family's possession until 1792, when Duke Louis-Philippe-Joseph sold the entire collection to finance his political career and pay off debts. The painting passed through several English collections into the hands of the Bourgeois brothers, art dealers from Cologne, who sold the painting as an original Rembrandt to the museum in 1886. The painting was stored away for a long time due to doubts cast over its authenticity. Rhoon
200px, Castle Rhoon 200px, frameless Rhoon is a village that borders the municipality of the city of Rotterdam, South Holland, the Netherlands. According to its history it was established in 1199 and was ruled by the ''lords of Duiveland''. In the 14th century the village was struck by many floods. In the last big flood, the North Sea flood of 1953, the Dutch government implemented the "deltawerken" (Delta Works). This is a large protection barrier of dikes and dams to keep the water of the North Sea out during high tides.
