Hendrik Swalmius
Hendrik Swalmius (1577 – 1649), was a Dutch theologian known today for his portrait by Frans Hals. Biography He was born in Rhoon as the son of Hendrick van de Swalme, or Henricus Swalmius, who was probably born in Flanders and spent time in England before becoming preacher in Rhoon in 1580. It was in Rhoon that he changed his name from Swalme to Swalmius. Swalmius the Elder had 4 sons: # Arnoldus, who became a preacher in Westmaas, 's Gravesande # Hendrik the younger, this Hendrik who married Judith van Breda in 1600 and became preacher of Oud-Alblas and later of the Grote Kerk, Haarlem in 1625 # Carel (1587-1640) who became a dike-reeve in IJzendijke # Eleazar Swalmius, Eleazar (1582-1652), who became a preacher in Amsterdam and was portrayed by Rembrandt (or someone in his studio). Rhoon
200px, Castle Rhoon 200px, frameless Rhoon is a village that borders the municipality of the city of Rotterdam, South Holland, the Netherlands. According to its history it was established in 1199 and was ruled by the ''lords of Duiveland''. In the 14th century the village was struck by many floods. In the last big flood, the North Sea flood of 1953, the Dutch government implemented the "deltawerken" (Delta Works). This is a large protection barrier of dikes and dams to keep the water of the North Sea out during high tides. In 1969 Rhoon also became part of this plan and a large dike was established around the island of IJsselmonde. Rhoon is part of the island of IJsselmonde and situated in the south of this island. On the lands outside the dikes is a small yacht marina on the banks of the river Oude Maas, and also a "griend" which is a tidal forest. Oud-Alblas is a village in the Dutch province of South Holland. It is a part of the municipality of Molenlanden, and lies about 6 km north of Dordrecht. In 2001, the village of Oud-Alblas had 1291 inhabitants. The dijkgraaf is the equivalent of a mayor in local government and a King's Commissioner in provincial government, chairing both the legislative and executive council, while having both ceremonial and representational roles as well as their own portfolios. IJzendijke
IJzendijke is a city in the municipality of Sluis, about 10 km east of Oostburg, in the Dutch province of Zeeland. The town received city rights in 1303. History The town was first mentioned in 1127 as Isendica, and means "dike of Iso (person)". IJzendijke used to be a possession of the Saint Peter's Abbey in Ghent. In 1127, it joined the Flemish Hanseatic League. In 1303, it received city rights. It was flooded in 1374, and lost completely in the St. Elizabeth's flood of 1404. In 1587, a sconce was constructed by the Spanish troops, and conquered by Maurice, Prince of Orange in 1604. Two ''polder''s were constructed, and after 1618, an octagon fortress was built with a central market square. In 1648, IJzendijke became a garrison city.
