Ekhoni
''Ekhoni'' (also ''Ekhonee''; English: ''Right Now'') is a 1971 Bengali film directed by Tapan Sinha, starring Aparna Sen, Moushumi Chatterjee, Chinmoy Roy and others. Based on an award-winning novel of the same name by Ramapada Chowdhury, ''Ekhoni'' was one of the earliest films to address the problems of urban youth, and to replace the individual hero by a collective protagonist. At the 19th National Film Awards, it won the National Award for Best Screenplay. It also won two BFJA Awards. Synopsis The film follows a group of young, college-going men and women. They spend much of their time hanging out at a downbeat tea shop. There are romantic involvements and clashes with their parents and other family members. Most of all, these young people feel a sense of uncertainty about the future. Urmi (Aparna Sen) is from an affluent family and has a fiancé who is an engineer. Ramapada Chowdhury
Ramapada Chowdhury (28 December 1922 – 29 July 2018) was an Indian novelist and short story writer in Bengali. For his novel ''Bari Badle Jay'', he received the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1988. He was also a recipient of the Rabindra Puraskar and several other awards. He won the Rabindranath Tagore Memorial International Prize in its inaugural year. Many of his works have been adapted into films, including the multiple-award-winning ''Kharij'', directed by Mrinal Sen, and '' Ek Doctor Ki Maut'', directed by Tapan Sinha. Chowdhury started writing during the Second World War. He was associated with Anandabazar Patrika for many years, and edited its Sunday supplement. His novels are marked by an economy of expression. Tapan Sinha
Tapan Sinha (2 October 1924 – 15 January 2009) was one of the most prominent Indian film directors of his time forming a legendary quartet with Satyajit Ray, Ritwik Ghatak and Mrinal Sen. He was primarily a Bengali filmmaker who worked both in Hindi cinema and Bengali cinema, directing films like '' Kabuliwala'' (1957), ''Louha-Kapat'', ''Sagina Mahato'' (1970), ''Apanjan'' (1968), ''Kshudhita Pashan'' and children's film ''Safed Haathi'' (1978) and ''Aaj Ka Robinhood''. Swarup Dutta
Swarup Dutta (22 June 1941 – 24 July 2019) was a Bengali actor. His son Saron Dutta is a director in Bengali film industry. Early life Dutta was born in famous Dutta family of Hatkhola, Kolkata in 1941. In 1958 he passed Matriculation from the South Point School and completed I.A. from Ramakrishna Mission Vidyamandira. Dutta graduated in economics from St. Xavier's College, Kolkata. Career During his school days Dutta came into contact with veteran actor Utpal Dutt. He also performed with Utpal Dutt on stage. First breakthrough of his career is Apanjan, a popular drama film of Tapan Sinha released in 1968. This movie won the National Film Award. Apanjan
''Apanjan'' (also ''Apan Jan''; roughly translated in English as "One's own people") is a 1968 Bengali film directed by Tapan Sinha. Set against the backdrop of the political violence that rocked India, and West Bengal in particular, in the late 1960s, it tells the story of an aged widow in a village who goes to Calcutta to stay with relatives, but faces only exploitation. She moves to a slum, and finds her "own people" in a group of educated, unemployed youth, who are caught up inexorably in the prevalent violence. Rudraprasad Sengupta
Rudraprasad Sengupta (born 31 January 1935) is a Bengali Indian actor, director and cultural critic. Biography Sengupta was born in Calcutta (now Kolkata), Bengal, the son of Anant Sengupta and Usha Prabha Sengupta. He studied at the Scottish Church College of the University of Calcutta where he earned his B.A. and M.A degrees in English literature. He was formerly a reader in English at the Brahmananda Keshab Chandra College, Calcutta, and a visiting lecturer in the Drama Department of Rabindra Bharati University. In 1961 he joined the Kolkata-based theatre group Nandikar and in the early 1970s started to direct several plays for the group. In the late 1970s he became the leader of the group. Subhendu Chatterjee
Shubhendu Chatterjee, M.B.B.S. (29 November 1936 – 5 July 2007) was an Indian physician and actor, who is known for acting in Bengali television and films. A contemporary of actors Uttam Kumar and Soumitra Chatterjee, with whom he played second hero in many films, Dr. Chatterjee with age had graduated into character roles. Personal life His father was Shailendra Chattopadhay and mother was Manimala Devi. In 1953, he was admitted into Calcutta Medical College. In 1960, he completed his M.B.B.S. and became a physician. Chinmoy Roy
Chinmoy Roy (1940–2019) was an Indian Bengali male actor. He was famous for his comic roles in Bengali movies, though his versatility has allowed him to play a variety of roles. Though he was known for portraying various character roles, Roy was equally at ease in portraying the famous fictional character Tenida on screen. He held his own among prominent performers like Soumitra Chatterjee, Robi Ghose and Tarun Kumar in the comedies ''Basanto Bilap'', ''Dhonni Meye'', and ''Nanigopaler Biye''.
