Ediciones Universal is a publishing house founded in Miami, Florida, USA, in 1965 by Juan Manuel and Marta O. Salvat. The biggest publishing house among the Cuban exile community, it is largely dedicated to publishing material critical of the communist Cuban leader Fidel Castro. Ediciones Universal's website describes its mission as "to rescue essential works of Cuban culture and make them available to readers." The company claims responsibility for publishing over 1,000 Spanish-language texts by expatriate Cuban authors. Though political, social and biographical works make up the majority of its collection, Ediciones Universal also publishes literary works as well as books on art, photography, Afro-Cuban interest and other topics. Afro-Cubans or Black Cubans are Cubans of West African ancestry. The term ''Afro-Cuban'' can also refer to historical or cultural elements in Cuba thought to emanate from this community and the combining of native African and other cultural elements found in Cuban society such as race, religion, music, language, the arts and class culture. Carlos Alberto Montaner
Carlos Alberto Montaner (born April 3, 1943) is an exiled Cuban author and journalist known for his criticism of Fidel Castro and the Cuban government. He has been published widely in Latin American newspapers, and published fiction and non-fiction books on Latin America. Montaner is a political analyst for CNN en Español. Background Montaner was born in Havana, Cuba, in 1943. After the Cuban Revolution of 1959, Montaner along with others identified then as counter-revolutionaries were imprisoned by the Cuban government on charges of participating in terrorist attacks and on charges of working with the CIA. Soon after his arrest on charges of terrorist activities, he managed to escape from prison and fled Cuba permanently. In 1970 he relocated to Spain from the United States. Enrique Emilio Ros y Pérez (1924 – April 10, 2013) was a Cuban-American businessman, author, and activist opposed to Cuban president Fidel Castro. Reinaldo Arenas (July 16, 1943 – December 7, 1990) was a Cuban poet, novelist, and playwright known as a vocal critic of Fidel Castro, the Cuban Revolution, and the Cuban government. His memoir of the Cuban dissident movement and of being a political prisoner, ''Before Night Falls'', was dictated after his escape to the United States during the 1980 Mariel boatlift and published posthumously, after Arenas, who was dying of AIDS, committed suicide with an overdose of pills.
