Eaton, Northern Territory
__NOTOC__ Eaton is a suburb in the Northern Territory of Australia located in the city of Darwin. It consists of the land occupied by the Darwin International Airport and RAAF Base Darwin. Eaton is named in commemoration of Charles Eaton (1895 - 1979), a senior officer in the Royal Australian Air Force whose service included appointment as the “Station Commander of RAAF Darwin” in 1940. The suburb’s boundary and name were gazetted on 4 April 2007. The 2016 Australian census which was conducted in August 2016 reports that Eaton had 213 people living within its boundaries. The City of Darwin is a local government area of the Northern Territory, Australia. It includes the central business district of the capital, Darwin City, and represents two-thirds of its metropolitan population. The City covers an area of and, in June 2018, had a population of 84,613 people. History The first Town and District Council was formed in 1874. The Darwin Town Council was created in 1915. Coconut Grove is a northern suburb of the city of Darwin, Northern Territory, Australia within the local government area of City of Darwin. History Coconut Grove is named for the grove of coconuts on the coastal fringe of the area. Development of Coconut Grove dates back to the pre-war years when it was mainly used for farming, but the suburb primarily grew from the 1960s. Coconut Grove is a small residential and light industrial suburb. Coconut Grove is bounded by Progress Drive in the north, Bagot Road in the east, Totem Road in the south and the Darwin Harbour foreshore in the west. 2016 Australian Census
The 2016 Australian census was the 17th national population census held in Australia. The census was officially conducted with effect on Tuesday, 9 August 2016. The total population of the Commonwealth of Australia was counted as – an increase of 8.8 per cent or people over the . Norfolk Island joined the census for the first time in 2016, adding 1,748 to the population. The ABS annual report revealed that $24 million in additional expenses accrued due to the outage on the census website. Results from the 2016 census were available to the public on 11 April 2017, from the Australian Bureau of Statistics website, two months earlier than for any previous census. The second release of data occurred on 27 June 2017 and a third data release was from 17 October 2017. Australia's next census took place in 2021. Charles Eaton (RAAF Officer)
Charles Eaton, Order of the British Empire, OBE, Air Force Cross (United Kingdom), AFC (21 December 1895 – 12 November 1979) was a senior officer and aviator in the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF), and later served as a diplomat. Born in London, he joined the British Army upon the outbreak of World War I and saw action on the Western Front (World War I), Western Front before transferring to the Royal Flying Corps in 1917. Posted as a bomber pilot to No. 206 Squadron RAF, No. 206 Squadron, he was twice captured by German forces, and twice escaped. Eaton left the military in 1920 and worked in India until moving to Australia in 1923. RAAF Base Darwin is a Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) military air base located in the city of Darwin, in the Northern Territory, Australia. The base shares its runway with Darwin International Airport, for civil aviation purposes. The heritage-listed RAAF Base Darwin is a forward operating base with year-round activity with approximately 400 personnel. History Construction of the airfield began in 1938 and RAAF Station Darwin was established on 1 June 1940, from elements of No. 12 Squadron RAAF. Darwin International Airport is the busiest airport serving the Northern Territory and the tenth busiest airport in Australia. It is the only airport serving Darwin. Spillett is a division of the Northern Territory Legislative Assembly in Australia. It was created in 2016, for the 2016 general elections, and surrounds Palmerston. It is named for Peter Spillett, a historian and former member of Darwin City Council. Historically, Palmerston has been a stronghold for the conservative Country Liberal Party. However, Spillett is based on a particularly conservative portion of Palmerston. It was created with a notional CLP majority of 17.9 percent, making it on paper the CLP's safest metropolitan seat. Before the election Lia Finocchiaro, the then-CLP member for Drysdale, opted to transfer to Spillett after much of her old base was redistributed there.
