Coconut Grove is a northern suburb of the city of Darwin, Northern Territory, Australia within the local government area of City of Darwin. History Coconut Grove is named for the grove of coconuts on the coastal fringe of the area. Development of Coconut Grove dates back to the pre-war years when it was mainly used for farming, but the suburb primarily grew from the 1960s. Coconut Grove is a small residential and light industrial suburb. Coconut Grove is bounded by Progress Drive in the north, Bagot Road in the east, Totem Road in the south and the Darwin Harbour foreshore in the west. The City of Darwin is a local government area of the Northern Territory, Australia. It includes the central business district of the capital, Darwin City, and represents two-thirds of its metropolitan population. The City covers an area of and, in June 2018, had a population of 84,613 people. History The first Town and District Council was formed in 1874. The Darwin Town Council was created in 1915. Electoral Division Of Nightcliff
Nightcliff is an electoral division of the Legislative Assembly in Australia's Northern Territory. It was first created in 1974, and takes its name from the suburb of the same name. Nightcliff is one of the smallest electorates in the Territory, covering only 4.28 km² and taking in the Darwin suburb of Nightcliff, most of Rapid Creek and a small area of Coconut Grove. There were 5,621 people enrolled in the electorate as of August 2020. For most of the first quarter-century of its existence, Nightcliff was somewhat marginal, with incumbents generally holding the seat for several years. The seat's first member, independent Dawn Lawrie, was one of only two non-Country Liberal Party members in the first parliament. Nightcliff is a northern suburb of the city of Darwin, Northern Territory, Australia. History Although the origin of the name Nightcliff has always been surrounded by conjecture and controversy, the naming can be tracked back to 8 September 1839. Early that day, , which was engaged on an excursion of the Australian coast, sailed into the area and anchored in Shoal Bay near Hope Inlet. Rapid Creek, Northern Territory
Rapid Creek is both a creek in the city of Darwin, Northern Territory, Australia and the name of a suburb north of the city, situated where the creek empties into Darwin Harbour. History Although the precise circumstances of the naming of Rapid Creek remain obscure, the name must have been applied by Surveyor-General George W. Goyder's surveyors not long after the arrival of the 1869 Northern Territory Survey Expedition. The outline of the creek, running from Marrara swamp to the sea between Casuarina Beach and Nightcliff, is present on Goyder's map, though no name appears on it. Goyder personally visited the locality on Saturday, 3 April 1869 and described the creek, without naming it, as ''"a strong shallow stream near Night Cliff''". Sometime between then and 13 September, the name came into existence. Millner, Northern Territory
Millner is a northern suburb in the city of Darwin, in the Northern Territory of Australia. History Millner was named after Dr James S. Millner, the medical officer in George W. Goyder's 1869 expedition to found the first colony at Port Darwin. He went on to serve as Protector of Aborigines until his death in 1875. Millner and his family perished on the ill-fated ''SS Gothenburg'', which was wrecked on the Great Barrier Reef on 24 February 1875, with the loss of 102 lives. The National Archives of Australia (Darwin) is located in Kelsey Crescent. The Darwin office was under construction when Cyclone Tracy devastated Darwin in Christmas 1974. Construction continued, after the clean-up of the town, and the building opened in 1976. East Point, Northern Territory
East Point is an inner northern suburb of the city of Darwin, Northern Territory of Australia. East Point, Lee Point and Point Charles all appear on Goyder's original plan of Port Darwin in 1869. This point, the easterly extremity of the entrance to Darwin Harbour has been used for a variety of purposes. It was the site of naval and anti-aircraft guns during World War II (1942–46), a post war golf course and currently a recreation reserve including a pony club and a war museum.
