Rapid Creek, Northern Territory
Rapid Creek is both a creek in the city of Darwin, Northern Territory, Australia and the name of a suburb north of the city, situated where the creek empties into Darwin Harbour. History Although the precise circumstances of the naming of Rapid Creek remain obscure, the name must have been applied by Surveyor-General George W. Goyder's surveyors not long after the arrival of the 1869 Northern Territory Survey Expedition. The outline of the creek, running from Marrara swamp to the sea between Casuarina Beach and Nightcliff, is present on Goyder's map, though no name appears on it. Goyder personally visited the locality on Saturday, 3 April 1869 and described the creek, without naming it, as ''"a strong shallow stream near Night Cliff''". Sometime between then and 13 September, the name came into existence. Cyclone Tracy
Cyclone Tracy was a tropical cyclone that devastated the city of Darwin, Northern Territory, Australia, from 24 to 26 December 1974. The small, developing easterly storm had been observed passing clear of the city initially, but then turned towards it early on 24 December. After 10:00 p.m. ACST, damage became severe, and wind gusts reached before instruments failed. The anemometer in Darwin Airport control tower had its needle bent in half by the strength of the gusts. Residents of Darwin were celebrating Christmas, and did not immediately acknowledge the emergency, partly because they had been alerted to an earlier cyclone ( Selma) that passed west of the city, and did not affect it in any way. Nightcliff
Nightcliff is a northern suburb of the city of Darwin, Northern Territory, Australia. History Although the origin of the name Nightcliff has always been surrounded by conjecture and controversy, the naming can be tracked back to 8 September 1839. Early that day, , which was engaged on an excursion of the Australian coast, sailed into the area and anchored in Shoal Bay near Hope Inlet. Bagot Road
Bagot Road is a major arterial road in Darwin, Northern Territory Australia. The road forms part of the main transport route between the Central Business District, northern suburbs and Darwin International Airport. The origins of the name Bagot Road is believed to be in reference to the Bagot family of South Australia, who had significant land holdings in the early Northern Territory. In 2010, the road was used by an average of 34,487 vehicles per day. Due to the high traffic volumes, a number of major retailers and fast food outlets are situated along Bagot Road. Darwinbus Route 10 and Orbital Link services travel the length of Bagot Road with frequent stops in both directions. Trower Road
Trower Road is a major arterial road in the northern suburbs of Darwin, Northern Territory, Australia. The road is a major access route for services and institutions located in the Casuarina area, including Casuarina Square, Royal Darwin Hospital and Charles Darwin University. The road is named for Horace M Trower, Director of Lands from 1917-21. It is one of the busiest roads in Darwin, used by an average of 27,084 vehicles per day in 2010, behind only Bagot Road and the Stuart Highway.
