East Malaita
East Malaita is a single-member List of constituencies of the National Parliament of the Solomon Islands, constituency of the National Parliament of Solomon Islands. Located on the island of Malaita, it was established in 1973 when the Governing Council of the Solomon Islands, Governing Council was expanded from 17 to 24 seats. It was abolished in 1993 when Parliament was expanded from 38 to 47 seats, but re-established in 1997 when a further three seats were added. Alfred Maetia, who served as MP for East Malaita between 1980 and 1993, was elected in Central Kwara'ae constituency, Central Kwara'ae in the 1993 Solomon Islands general election, 1993 elections, but returned to contest the East Malaita seat in 1997 Solomon Islands general election, 1997. The Solomon Islands United Party (UP) is a political party in Solomon Islands. 1984 Solomon Islands General Election
General elections were held in the Solomon Islands on 24 October 1984. A total of 230 candidates contested the elections, the result of which was a victory for the Solomon Islands United Party, which won 13 of the 38 seats, despite receiving fewer votes than the People's Alliance Party. John Moffat Fugui
John Moffat Fugui (9 September 1961 – 22 December 2022) was a Solomon Islands politician. Life and career Fugui was born on 9 September 1961. He obtained his first Master's degree at the University of Canterbury in New Zealand, then two more at the University of Hawai'i in the United States, where he was enrolled in a PhD program. He subsequently worked as a political adviser to the Solomon Islands government. Afu Billy
Afu Lia Billy (born 1959) is a women's rights activist and writer in Solomon Islands. Since the late 1970s, she has worked to promote women's rights and combat violence against women, including through work with various local and international NGOs. Early life and education Afu Billy was born in 1959 on the small island of Kwai, in Solomon Islands' Malaita Province. Her parents, Ariel Billy and Crystal Ufariaia, were evangelical leaders with the South Seas Evangelical Church. Billy, who describes her upbringing as strict, was sent to live with her uncle in the capital, Honiara, in order to receive a better education. She became the only member of her family to attend high school, part of the first generation of women in Solomon Islands to access secondary education. Billy was married at a young age, in her early 20s, and had two daughters. 2006 Solomon Islands General Election
General elections were held in the Solomon Islands on 5 April 2006. No party won more than four of the fifty seats, while thirty seats went to independent candidates. A number of those subsequently formed an Association of Independent Members of Parliament, with Snyder Rini as their leader. Rini was elected Prime Minister by Parliament on 18 April, amidst "widespread street protests" in Honiara, which caused particular damage in the city's Chinatown. Rioters "alleged corruption and insisted that Mr. Rini had been unfairly favouring Chinese businessmen". While the riots ceased with the arrival of Australian and New Zealand peacekeeping troops the next day, the opposition soon lodged a motion of no confidence in Rini's premiership. 2010 Solomon Islands General Election
General elections were held in the Solomon Islands on 4 August 2010. The election date was announced in May 2010 by Prime Minister Derek Sikua. Although the announcement was deemed to be premature, as only the Governor General has the authority to announce the election date upon the advice of the Electoral Commission, the election date remained the same. Candidates There were a total of 509 candidates, including 25 women. Results The event was overseen by international election observers connected with the United Nations International Election Observation Coordination Team. The elections were described as peaceful, although strong concerns were expressed about voter registration irregularities. 25 incumbents were returned and 25 were replaced (including three seats where the incumbent chose not to recontest and one seat that was vacant due to the death of Edward Huni'ehu).
