8th Parliament Of Solomon Islands
The 8th Parliament of Solomon Islands, determined by the 2006 general election, was the National Parliament of Solomon Islands from 2006 to 2010. It was preceded by the seventh and followed by the ninth. The 8th Parliament consisted in 50 representatives, elected from 50 single-seat constituencies. 2006 Solomon Islands General Election
General elections were held in the Solomon Islands on 5 April 2006. No party won more than four of the fifty seats, while thirty seats went to independent candidates. A number of those subsequently formed an Association of Independent Members of Parliament, with Snyder Rini as their leader. Rini was elected Prime Minister by Parliament on 18 April, amidst "widespread street protests" in Honiara, which caused particular damage in the city's Chinatown. Rioters "alleged corruption and insisted that Mr. Rini had been unfairly favouring Chinese businessmen". While the riots ceased with the arrival of Australian and New Zealand peacekeeping troops the next day, the opposition soon lodged a motion of no confidence in Rini's premiership. Rini resigned on 26 April, having been Prime Minister for just eight days. Seth Gukuna
Seth Gukuna (born August 21, 1961) is a member of the National Parliament of the Solomon Islands, representing a constituency in Rennell and Bellona Province. Hon. Gukuna defeated Joses Tuhanuku in 2006. He won his second term in 2010 by a significant margin. Bernard Ghiro
Bernard Ghiro (born August 28, 1960) is a Solomon Islands politician and a former member of the National Parliament of the Solomon Islands. Political career Ghiro became active in national politics when he contested the Central Makira constituency in the 2001 general elections. He was elected after defeating the incumbent MP Japhet Waipora. He was re-elected in the 2006 elections, but was defeated by Hypolite Taremae in the 2010 elections. Central Kwara'ae
Central Kwara'ae is a parliamentary constituency electing one representative to the National Parliament of Solomon Islands. It had a registered electorate of 8,977 in 2006, and 9,955 in 2010. It is one of fourteen constituencies in Malaita Province. The constituency was established for the Fifth Parliament in 1993, and its first MP was Alfred Maetia. Fred Fono won the seat in 1997, and was twice re-elected, ultimately becoming deputy Prime Minister in 2007. He stood for a fourth term in 2010, but was unseated by political newcomer and independent candidate Jackson Fiulaua, in what was described as "the major upset" of the election. West or Occident is one of the four cardinal directions or points of the compass. It is the opposite direction from east and is the direction in which the Sun sets on the Earth.
