9th Parliament Of Solomon Islands
The 9th Parliament of Solomon Islands, determined by the 2010 general election, was the National Parliament of Solomon Islands from 2010 until 2014. It was preceded by the eighth and followed by the tenth. The 9th Parliament consisted in 50 representatives, elected from 50 single-seat constituencies. Party standings The various parties had the following number of seats. The Speaker is chosen from outside Parliament. Members The following were the 50 members of the 9th Parliament. Of these, only seven had been in Parliament prior to 2006. Job Tausinga is Parliament's veteran, having been continuously elected since 1984. Danny Philip was first elected in 1984, but lost his seat in 2001, before regaining it in 2010. Walter Folotalu was first elected in 1994, lost his seat in 1997, and returned to Parliament in a by-election in 2008. 2010 Solomon Islands General Election
General elections were held in the Solomon Islands on 4 August 2010. The election date was announced in May 2010 by Prime Minister Derek Sikua. Although the announcement was deemed to be premature, as only the Governor General has the authority to announce the election date upon the advice of the Electoral Commission, the election date remained the same. Candidates There were a total of 509 candidates, including 25 women. Results The event was overseen by international election observers connected with the United Nations International Election Observation Coordination Team. The elections were described as peaceful, although strong concerns were expressed about voter registration irregularities. 25 incumbents were returned and 25 were replaced (including three seats where the incumbent chose not to recontest and one seat that was vacant due to the death of Edward Huni'ehu). People's Congress Party
The People's Congress Party is a political party in Solomon Islands. It was founded by outgoing deputy Prime Minister Fred Fono during the campaign for the 2010 general election. Upon first announcing the priorities of the party, Fono stated its focus would be on "anti-corruption measures, such as reforming the controversial rural constituency development funds, and on creating jobs for Solomon Islanders". During the campaign, he said that it would "treat infrastructure as its priority", such as the development of roads in the country. He pointed to his own Central Kwara'ae constituency, arguing that he had achieved an improvement in water supplies and health care services. The party would also "create incentives to stimulate economic activities in the rural areas", with an aim to "double the export of cocoa, copra, fish and sawn timber". Danny Philip (born 5 August 1953) is a politician and diplomat from Solomon Islands. He was Prime Minister of Solomon Islands from 2010 to 2011. Previously he served as Foreign minister, Minister of Foreign Affairs from 1995 to 1996 and again from July 2000 to June 2001. Job Dudley Tasinga, CSI (born July 18, 1951) is a member of the National Parliament of the Solomon Islands. He lives on New Georgia Island, in the Western Province, and was first elected in 1984. He was Minister of Foreign Affairs from 1992 to 1993. Speaker Of The National Parliament Of Solomon Islands
The Speaker of the National Parliament is the Speaker of the National Parliament of the Solomon Islands. The position was established under section 64 of the Constitution of the Solomon Islands of 1978, when the country became independent from the United Kingdom. It is similar to the position of Speaker of the House of Commons in the U.K.; the Solomon Islands is a Commonwealth realm and maintains a Westminster system of government. The Speaker is elected to the post by Members of Parliament every four years, as mandated by Order 5 of the Standing Orders of the National Parliament. The latter Order stipulates that "Every citizen of Solomon Islands over the age of twenty-one and who is otherwise qualified for election as a Member shall be eligible for election as Speaker". Rural Development Party
The Rural Development Party was a political party in Papua New Guinea. It was founded in November 2006 by Esa’ala MP Moses Maladina, who became the party's first leader. In May 2007, media reports suggested that some members were unhappy with a perceived lack of party financial support for their campaigns. It was reported to have won three out of 109 seats at the 2007 general elections: Maladina, Alphonse Moroi (Central Provincial) and Benjamin Philip (Mariyama Open). A fourth, Manus Provincial MP Michael Sapau, had been reported as a party candidate during the campaign, but denied any association upon his election and claimed to be an independent. Samuel Manetoali
Samuel Manetoali (born 24 January 1969) is a member of the National Parliament of the Solomon Islands. He represents the Gao/Bugotu constituency in Isabel Province. Early life and education Manetoali attended Lepi Primary School and then went on to do his secondary education at King George Sixth National School in Honiara. He attended law school at the University of Papua New Guinea and graduated with an LLB degree and further unspecified qualifications from the University of Tasmania and University of South Australia. Career Prior to entering politics, Manetoali worked in the country's Public Solicitors Office, as a private lawyer, and a legal adviser to the Isabel Provincial Government. Rural And Urban Political Party
The Rural and Urban Political Party is a political party in Solomon Islands. It was founded in June 2010 by MP Samuel Manetoali as a split-away from the Party for Rural Advancement, specifically to take part in the August 2010 general election. The party's stated policy priorities upon its launch were economic growth and security. Manetoali called for small business centres to be set up all over the country, along with appropriate infrastructure, to enable local people's participation in business, and stimulate growth. Manetoali was re-elected in his constituency of Gao-Bugotu, but no other candidate from the party obtained a seat.
