Du Quoin ( ) is a city in Perry County, Illinois. It is best known for hosting the annual DuQuoin State Fair and the Street Machine Nationals. The population is estimated at 5,761 in the 2020 census. Geography Du Quoin is located at (38.0068, -89.2349). The city of Du Quoin is located in the southeastern portion of Perry County, Illinois. According to the 2010 census, Du Quoin has a total area of , of which (or 98.85%) is land and (or 1.15%) is water. Climate History The area east of Du Quoin is known as Old Du Quoin. In the early 19th century, Du Quoin was near the Lusk's Ferry Road, an important early road that connected Kaskaskia with Lusk's Ferry on the Ohio River. The road ran easterly out of Steeleville to a point southwest of Du Quoin. There it turned to the southeast to cross the Big Muddy River and head for Lusk's Ferry. Steeleville is a village in Randolph County, Illinois, United States. The population was 2,083 at the 2010 census. Geography According to the 2010 census, Steeleville has a total area of , of which (or 99.48%) is land and (or 0.52%) is water. Steeleville is located adjacent to Mary's River, a direct tributary of the Mississippi River. History Steeleville had the names Alma, Georgetown and Steele's Mill before obtaining its present name. The area near Steeleville was first settled by John Steele in 1807. In 1810 George Steele (John's son) settled in what came to be known as Georgetown. In 1812 a fort was built for protection against the Indians. In 1825 Steele's Mill was erected. Col. Gabriel Jones had a store. In 1827 the Post Office opened under the name Steele's Mill. Chicago Union Station is an intercity and commuter rail terminal located in the Near West Side neighborhood of Chicago, Illinois. The station is Amtrak's flagship station in the Midwest. While serving long-distance passenger trains, it is also the downtown terminus for six Metra commuter lines. Carbondale is a city in Jackson and Williamson Counties, Illinois, United States, within the Southern Illinois region informally known as "Little Egypt". The city developed from 1853 because of the stimulation of railroad construction into the area. Today the major roadways of Illinois Route 13 and U.S. Route 51 intersect in the city. WDQN (1580 AM, "MeTV FM 97.1") is a radio station based in Du Quoin, Illinois. It is owned by the Du Quoin Broadcasting Company and operated by E&R Media. It transmits on 1580 kHz at 170 watts daytime & 6.6 watts nighttime. History WDQN began as WAVA of the Ava Broadcasting Company and was based out of Ava, Illinois. The station was moved to Du Quoin in 1953 and began transmitting from north of Du Quoin in St. Johns. The station then changed its call letters to WDQN of the DuQuoin Broadcasting Company. Their first studio was in Du Quoin on the 2nd floor of the Riggio building at Main and Walnut Streets. Around 1959 they constructed their studio at the site of their tower. The station signed on with a BC-GY250 radio transmitter that was manufactured by the Gates Radio Corporation of Quincy, Illinois in 1953. Shawnee
The Shawnee are an Algonquian-speaking indigenous people of the Northeastern Woodlands. In the 17th century they lived in Pennsylvania, and in the 18th century they were in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana and Illinois, with some bands in Kentucky and Alabama. By the 19th century, they were forcibly removed to Missouri, Kansas, Texas, and ultimately Indian Territory, which became Oklahoma under the 1830 Indian Removal Act. Today, Shawnee people are enrolled in three federally recognized tribes, all headquartered in Oklahoma: the Absentee-Shawnee Tribe of Indians, Eastern Shawnee Tribe of Oklahoma, and Shawnee Tribe.
