Rantoul, Illinois
Rantoul is a village in Champaign County, Illinois, United States. The population was 12,371 at the 2020 census. History The community was named after Robert Rantoul, Jr., a U.S. representative from Massachusetts, and a director of the Illinois Central Railroad. Rantoul was laid out in 1854 for the Illinois Central Railroad by John Penfield. A post office was established in 1856 as Rantoul Station; the name was changed to Rantoul in May 1862. In 1917, Rantoul was chosen by the United States Army to be the site of Chanute Field, due to its proximity to the Illinois Central railroad and the War Department's ground school at the University of Illinois. In the 1930s, Chanute Field grew, dominating the local economy as thousands of airmen were stationed there to train recruits. Champaign County Area Rural Transit System
Champaign County Area Rural Transit System, or C-CARTS is the primary provider of mass transportation in Champaign County, Illinois, with routes serving the Rantoul area. As of 2021, the system provided 27,682 rides over 6,915 annual vehicle revenue hours. History Public transit in Rantoul has existed since at least 1952, when the Rantoul Transit Co. served the city. However, by the 1970s, service had ended. In 1995, in order to address the transportation needs of rural Champaign County and Rantoul, a county Rural Transportation Steering Committee was established. Little changed until 2007, when IDOT notified Champaign County of available funding specifically for rural public transportation. Illinois Central Railroad
The Illinois Central Railroad , sometimes called the Main Line of Mid-America, was a railroad in the Central United States, with its primary routes connecting Chicago, Illinois, with New Orleans, Louisiana, and Mobile, Alabama. A line also connected Chicago with Sioux City, Iowa (1870). There was a significant branch to Omaha, Nebraska (1899), west of Fort Dodge, Iowa, and another branch reaching Sioux Falls, South Dakota (1877), starting from Cherokee, Iowa. The ''City of New Orleans'' is an Amtrak passenger train which operates on an overnight schedule between Chicago and New Orleans. The train is a successor to the Illinois Central Railroad's ''Panama Limited''. The original ''City of New Orleans'' began in 1947 as part of the Illinois Central Railroad, and was the longest daylight run in the United States. The daylight train under that name ran through 1971, when it was moved to an overnight schedule as the ''Panama Limited.'' The present name was brought back in 1981, still on an overnight schedule. The train is the subject of the bittersweet 1971 song "City of New Orleans", written by Steve Goodman. The train operates along a route that has been served in one form or another for over a century.
