Douglas GAA is a Gaelic Athletic Association club located in Douglas, County Cork, Ireland. The club participates at different levels in hurling, Gaelic football, camogie and ladies football. The club is part of the Seandún division of Cork GAA. History A hurling team representing Douglas participated in the first Cork Senior Hurling Championship in 1887. A number of Douglas-based clubs, including Castletreasure and St Columbas, existed through the early 20th century, before the latter was renamed 'Douglas Hurling and Football Club' in 1938. The club's first championship win was in the Cork Junior Football Championship of 1962. The Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA; ga, Cumann Lúthchleas Gael ; CLG) is an Irish international amateur sporting and cultural organisation, focused primarily on promoting indigenous Gaelic games and pastimes, which include the traditional Irish sports of hurling, camogie, Gaelic football, Gaelic handball and rounders. The association also promotes Irish music and dance, as well as the Irish language. Cork Under-21 Football Championship
The Cork Under-21 Football Championship is a Gaelic football competition in County Cork, Ireland for players under the age of 21. Clubs affiliated to Cork board compete to win this championship. All eight of the divisions in Cork organize their own championship. The divisional winners compete against each other to decide the county title. Trophy The winning team is presented with the Pádraig A. Ó Murchú Cup. This cup commemorates Patrick Aloyius "Weeshie" Murphy of Bere Island, who served the GAA for many years, both as a player and an administrator. John Bennett (hurler)
John Bennett (1934 – 10 August 2016) was an Irish hurler whose league and championship career with the Cork senior team spanned eight years from 1960 to 1968. Born in Douglas on the south side of Cork city, Bennett moved from Douglas GAA to Blackrock GAA club in his youth, and he subsequently joined the Blackrock senior team. At club level, he won two Cork Senior Hurling Championship medals with Blackrock. As a Gaelic footballer he played with St Michael's of Blackrock, before finishing his club career with Douglas. Bennett made his debut on the inter-county scene when he was added to the Cork senior panel for the 1960 All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship. Over the next few years, he found it difficult to establish himself on the team, however, by 1966 he was a regular in the forward line. Brian Turnbull
Brian Turnbull (born 1999) is an Irish hurler who plays for Cork Senior Championship club Douglas and at inter-county level with the Cork senior hurling team. He usually lines out as a left corner-forward. Playing career St. Francis College Turnbull first came to prominence as a hurler with St. Francis College in Rochestown. He played in every grade of hurling before eventually joining the college's senior hurling team. On 21 December 2015, Turnbull scored 3-04 for St. Francis College when they defeated Scoil Mhuire gan Smál from Blarney to win the Dr. O'Callaghan Cup. Seán Powter
Seán Powter (born 30 July 1997) is an Irish Gaelic footballer who plays as a centre-forward for the Cork senior team. Born in Rochestown, County Cork, Powter was first introduced to Gaelic games in his youth. He developed his skills in both hurling and Gaelic football at St. Francis College while simultaneously enjoying championship success as a dual player at underage levels with Douglas. Powter made his debut on the inter-county scene at the age of sixteen when he first linked up with the Cork minor teams as a dual player. Stephen Moylan (hurler)
Stephen Moylan (born 18 October 1987) is an Irish hurler who plays for Cork Senior Championship club Douglas. He played for the Cork senior hurling team for five seasons, during which time he usually lined out as a right corner-forward. Moylan began his hurling career at club level with Douglas. He broke onto the club's top adult team as a 17-year-old in 2005 and enjoyed his greatest success in 2009 when the club won the Premier Intermediate Championship and promotion to the top flight of Cork hurling. Ronan McCarthy
Ronan McCarthy (born 1973) is an Irish Gaelic football manager and former player. At club level he played with Douglas and was a member of and later managed the Cork senior football team. McCarthy usually lined out as a defender. Playing career McCarthy first came to prominence as a Gaelic footballer at juvenile and underage levels with the Douglas club. Shane Kingston (born 25 August 1997) is an Irish hurler who plays as a left wing-forward, full-forward and left corner-forward for club side Douglas and at inter-county level with the Cork senior hurling team. Eoin Cotter
Eoin Cotter (born 29 July 1987 in Douglas, Cork, Ireland) is an Irish sportsperson. He plays Gaelic football with his local club Douglas, and was a member of the Cork senior inter-county team from 2010. Before joining the senior team he also played underage with Cork. He was captain of the team that won the 2005 Munster Minor Football Championship.
