Diamond Challenge
The Netball South Africa Challenge (previously known as the Diamond Challenge and currently known as the SPAR Challenge) is an international netball tournament held close to biannually in South Africa and organised by the country's governing body for the sport, Netball South Africa. The challenge is contested by the South African national team and up to five other African nations. The inaugural tournament was held in 2012 and it has been contested in most subsequent years. History The tournament has been held in different South African cities since it began in 2012. The South African team has won each of the tournaments on offer. The tournament did not take place in 2014 and 2017. Netball
Netball is a ball sport played on a court by two teams of seven players. It is among a rare number of sports which have been created exclusively for female competitors. The sport is played on indoor and outdoor netball courts and is specifically played in schools. Netball is most popularly played in Commonwealth of Nations, Commonwealth nations. A common misunderstanding of the sport's origins has resulted in the mistaken belief that netball was created to prevent women from playing basketball. South Africa National Netball Team
The South Africa national netball team, nicknamed the SPAR Proteas, represents South Africa in women's international netball. The SPAR Proteas are coached by Dorette Badenhorst, and are captained by Bongiwe Msomi. The team are governed by Netball South Africa and sponsored by SPAR. South Africa are currently fifth in the INF World Rankings. History South Africa have long been among the top five ranked nations in netball, having twice won medals at the World Cup, once with a third-place finish in 1967 and later securing runner-up status to Australia in 1995. The national team was barred from participating in international test matches in 1969 because of the country's apartheid policies and were not readmitted until 1995. Norma Plummer
Norma Margaret Plummer AM (born 24 November 1944) is a former Australian national player who also served as netball coach for both Australia and South Africa. She was coach of Australia from 2003 to 2011, ending her coaching career with the Diamonds on 67 victories from 89 Tests — a success rate of 75 per cent. She was replaced as coach of Australia by Lisa Alexander. She was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia for her services to the sport. In November 2022 it is announced she will be returning to South Africa to coach the South Africa national netball side the Spar Proteas starting in 2022. The announcement comes ahead of next years 2023 Netball World Cup that will be held in South Africa. Seshego is a township in the Polokwane Local Municipality of the Capricorn District Municipality of the Limpopo province of the Republic of South Africa. 2021 SPAR Challenge Series
The 2021 SPAR Challenge was the sixth edition of the netball Challenge Tournament organised by Netball South Africa. The series was contested by three South African teams (the senior national team, the national "B" team known as the President's XII, and the under-21 team known as the Baby Proteas), the Ugandan national team, and the Namibian national team. The tournament was originally scheduled to occur in January 2021, though it was postponed to March due to a resurgence of COVID-19 cases in South Africa.
