Dame Malvina Major Foundation
The Dame Malvina Major Foundation, named after New Zealand soprano Malvina Major was established in 1991. The foundation fundraises as a charitable trust and offers a range of support and scholarships and prizes to emerging New Zealanders in performing arts. It has regional committees in Auckland, Waikato, Taranaki, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin. The foundation has many volunteers who support the running of it. One programme they offer is with New Zealand Opera. In 2022, the recipients of this studio programme were: Katherine Winiata, Emmanuel Fonoti-Fuimaono and Hannah Ashford-Beck. The foundation also provide prizes at the Lexus Song Quest singing competitions. Malvina Major
Dame Malvina Lorraine Major (born 28 January 1943) is a New Zealand opera soprano. Early life Major was born in Hamilton, New Zealand, into a large musical family. As a child she performed at various concerts, singing mainly country and western pop and music from the shows. She received her first classical training in 1955, from Sister Mary Magdalen at Ngāruawāhia, north of Hamilton. Sister Febronie continued with her voice training and Sister Liguori gave her piano tuition. As her potential blossomed, Major began travelling weekly to Ponsonby in Auckland, where she received further tuition from Dame Sister Mary Leo at St Mary's College. Sister Mary Leo was internationally recognised for having some of the country's best known singers, including Kiri Te Kanawa. Aivale Cole
Aivale Cole (née Mabel Faletolu) is a soprano singer from New Zealand. Background Cole was born Mabel Faletolu in Wellington, New Zealand. In 2005, Cole graduated from the Australian Opera Studio and was awarded the Dux Prize. She also has a BA in Performance Art from NASDA (National Academy of Singing and Dramatic Arts) in Christchurch and a Diploma in Performance Art (Opera) from the University of Auckland. Career Cole is a soprano opera singer. She has performed in concert and opera performances in New Zealand and internationally, including in the United Kingdom, China, Japan, Australia, Fiji, and New Caledonia. Stacey Alleaume (born ) is an Australian soprano. She is the principal soprano for Opera Australia of Australian and Mauritian descent. Biography Alleaume's family came from Port Louis in Mauritius where her grandfather had been mayor and her grand-uncle curator of the opera house. She then grew up in the Melbourne suburb of Narre Warren and studied voice at the University of Melbourne and the Music Academy of the West in Montecito. Howard Morrison
Sir Howard Leslie Morrison (18 August 1935 – 24 September 2009) was a New Zealand entertainer. From 1964 until his death in 2009, he was one of New Zealand's leading television and concert performers. Early life Of Māori (Te Arawa), Irish, and Scottish descent, Morrison was born to Temuera Leslie Morrison, a Māori All Black who worked for the Māori Affairs Department, and Kahurangi Morrison (née Gertrude Harete Davidson) who was known for her work in culture and entertainment. Madison Nonoa is a New Zealand-born soprano opera singer of Samoan, Niuean, and Pākehā heritage. Life Nonoa was born in the Waikato, and attended the University of Auckland, where she graduated in 2014 with a Bachelor of Music Honours (First Class). Maxwell Fernie
Arnott Maxwell Fernie (25 April 191022 May 1999) was a New Zealand organist, teacher and conductor. He was an authority on Gregorian chant, sixteenth century polyphony, organ construction and tonal design. Life Fernie was born in Wellington on 25 April 1910 and received his first schooling from the Marist Brothers in Newtown, New Zealand, Newtown and later at Wellington College (New Zealand), Wellington College. He became a leader in church music while still a young man, taking up the position of choir master and organist at St Joseph's Catholic Church, Wellington. At the outbreak of World War II, Fernie served with the second New Zealand Expeditionary Force in Egypt and Europe. Jacqueline Coats is a theatre director based in New Zealand who has worked in both opera and children's theatre, she has worked for various organisations including the New Zealand Festival, New Zealand Opera and Victorian Opera (Melbourne). Bianca Andrew is an operatic mezzo-soprano from New Zealand who has appeared in internationally, based at the Oper Frankfurt. Life and career Andrew was born in Wellington. She attended Marsden School, graduating in 2007. She studied at the New Zealand School of Music with Margaret Medlyn, where she graduated in 2011 with distinction.
