The Durham Palatinates are an English women's basketball team based in Durham, England. The Palatinates compete in the Women's British Basketball League (WBBL), the premier women's basketball competition in the United Kingdom. History The Palatinates officially joined the Women's British Basketball League in May 2017. The Durham University-backed team is a relaunch from the men's Wildcats team that competed in the British Basketball League between 2011 and 2015. Women's university team and former Wildcats head coach Lee Davie was retained as the Palatinates' first head coach. Women's British Basketball League
The Women's British Basketball League (WBBL) is the top-level women's basketball league in Great Britain, founded on 5 June 2014 as the women's counterpart to the British Basketball League (BBL). The league's headquarters are in Leicester alongside the offices of the men's BBL. Like the BBL, the organisation uses a franchise-based system so there is no promotion and relegation between the WBBL and the English Women's Basketball League, which forms the lower divisions. Along with the WBBL Championship and the post-season Play-offs, it also runs two knockout competitions featuring all WBBL member teams - the WBBL Cup and WBBL Trophy. Maiden Castle Sports Centre
Maiden Castle sports centre, also known as the Graham Sports Centre and the Durham University Sport and Wellbeing Park, is the main sports complex at Durham University and the home for many of the university's teams. It also stages professional football as the home of Durham W.F.C. since 2020 and is used as an international venue, including hosting one of the four 2023 Women's EuroHockey Championship Qualifiers tournaments in summer 2022 and the 1995 IAAF World Cross Country Championships. It has been used as a training ground by Hartlepool United since 2021, having previously been used by Newcastle United. Durham Wildcats
The Durham Wildcats are an English basketball club based in Newton Aycliffe, County Durham. The original incarnation were members of the British Basketball League, the top-level competition in the United Kingdom, and played their home games at the Newton Aycliffe Leisure Centre. Established in 2005, the club enjoyed a rapid rise through the British basketball system with successive promotions, before applying to join the top-tier British Basketball League in 2011. The club completed four seasons in the BBL, but withdrew following the 2014-15 season. The newly reformed Wildcats re-entered the English Basketball League in 2020. British Basketball League
The British Basketball League (BBL) is a men's professional basketball league in Great Britain and represents the highest level of play in the countries. The league is contested by 10 teams from England and Scotland. There are no clubs however from Wales or Northern Ireland. The BBL runs three additional knockout competitions alongside the BBL Championship which are the BBL Cup, the BBL Trophy and the end-of-season BBL Play-offs. The BBL sits above the National Basketball League and the Scottish Basketball Championship which effectively form the second tier of British basketball. There is currently no automatic promotion or relegation between the English and Scottish leagues and the BBL because of the franchise system in use in the BBL although several clubs have been successful in making the step up from the EBL in recent years. Queen's Campus is a site owned by the University of Durham located in Thornaby-on-Tees in the borough of Stockton-on-Tees, now home to the Durham University International Study Centre. It was founded in 1992 as University College, Stockton (UCS), a joint venture with the University of Teesside. Teesside withdrew from the project in 1998, and the campus was renamed University of Durham, Stockton Campus (UDSC).
