Dureco is a Dutch independent record label based in the Netherlands. Over the years many artists and groups such as the Amboina Serenaders, Judy Cheeks, Jules de Corte, De Dijk, Jef Elbers, Gotcha!, Samantha Jones, Ming Luhulima, the Mena Moeria Minstrels, Liz Mitchell, Julian Sas, Luv', Roger Peterson and Rene van Helsdingen have had their work released through Dureco. Background It was founded in 1952 as the Dutch division of the Pelgrims Group. It also had divisions in Belgium and France. By the early 1970s, it was selling 36 million records a year. Through its Sofrason company in France it was selling 22 million records and through Fonior in Belgium, it was selling 8 million. By 1972, it had its own 24-track studio. Ming Luhulima
Ming Luhulima, also known as Lou Lima was a Netherlands-based recording artist originally from the Maluku Islands, which were part of the Dutch East Indies. He was closely associated with Rudi Wairata during his career. Luhulima was a member of the Amboina Serenaders and the Mena Moeria Minstrels, and also led the Krontjong Ensemble Pantja Warna. Background Luhulima, a Moluccan musician became a well-known artist in the Netherlands, and like George de Fretes had gained fame there. In addition to being a singer, he also played guitar and ukulele. Along with George de Fretes, he was responsible for the promotion of the Portuguese style or genre of music in the Netherlands called Kroncong. Mena Moeria Minstrels
The Mena Moeria Minstrels were a popular Netherlands based Hawaiian music group. They were made up of mainly Moluccans from the former Dutch East Indies colony. The group was originally led by steel guitarist Rudi Wairata and also featured Joyce Aubrey and Ming Luhulima. They were prolific in their output releasing at least twenty singles in the 1950s. Background The Mena Moeria Minstrels, like their sister group the Amboina Serenaders were under the umbrella of Rudi Wairata. They were in the Hawaiian music bag. In 1951, the line up consisted of Rudi Wairata, Ming Luhulima, Charlie Kuipers, Pariury and Patty. Around 1952, Joyce Aubrey joined the group. Amboina Serenaders
The Amboina Serenaders were a successful and popular group that did well in the Netherlands in the 1950s. Its members included Ming Luhulima, Rudi Wairata and Joyce Aubrey, the ex wife of George de Fretes. They had a top ten hit in the Netherlands with "Klappermelk Met Suiker". History The Amboina Serenaders evolved out of the Mena Muria Minstrels, a group founded by Rudi Wairata in 1950. Line ups The line up included George de Fretes's ex wife Joyce Aubrey. Another member of the group was Miing Luhulima. In addition to Wairata, Luhulima and Aubrey, their 1953 line up also included Jack Salakory and Joop Sahanaya. In that year, there was a disagreement of sorts within the group which caused founder Wairata to leave. From then onwards, the group was led by Luhulima. Roger Peterson (musician)
Roger Francis Peterson (born 1 December 1980) is an Aruban-Dutch musician. He is known as the lead vocalist for the now-defunct rock band Intwine, which was active from 2001 to 2010. He also was a competitor on the first season of Dutch talent show '' Idols''. Biography Early life Roger Peterson was born in Savaneta to an Aruba-born father and a Curaçao-born mother. He grew up in the area of Savaneta and San Nicolaas. He has an elder brother named Ryan. At the age of six Peterson sang in a local church choir. He was fifteen years old when he drummed in a britpop band called Moose and a nu metal band named Lemonbong. With a fellow band member of Moose he started a new group named Alias, in which Peterson served as a vocalist. Julian Sas
Julian Sas (born 29 May 1970) is a Dutch blues rock guitarist, singer and songwriter. He has released almost 20 studio albums since 1996, with the most recent being the double CD release, ''Electracoustic'' on Cavalier Records. Life and career He was born in Beneden-Leeuwen, Netherlands, on a boat on the river Waal, and spent his early years living on a vessel moored there. When Sas was six years old, he saw Chuck Berry perform on television and Sas dreamt about owning a guitar. Later when he was eleven, he viewed Jimi Hendrix via the same medium and, after persisent asking, was given a guitar of his own a year later. Luv'
Luv' were a Dutch girl group that scored a string of hit records in Continental Europe (Benelux, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, France, Spain, Denmark, Norway and Finland) as well as Israel, South Africa, Rhodesia, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Argentina and Mexico in the late 1970s and early 1980s. The original members were Patty Brard, José Hoebee and Marga Scheide. In 1979, Luv' was 'Holland's best export act' and thus received the 'Buma Export Award, Conamus Export Prize'. The band sold more than seven million records worldwide (singles and albums). Rene Peter Onno Rubiono van Helsdingen (born 25 February 1957) is a Dutch pianist and composer. He studied classical music with Komter Loeber in Blaricum in the Netherlands from 1962–72. Then he studied jazz music with Terry Trotter and Lazlo Cser in Los Angeles in 1979. His earliest influences include Oscar Peterson, McCoy Tyner and Bill Evans. Samantha Jones (singer)
Jean Owen (born 17 November 1943), known as Samantha Jones is a former English singer whose career spanned the mid-1960s through the early 1980s. She won three international pop music contests and charted records in the Benelux countries. Her recordings later experienced a revival on the Northern soul scene. Jef Elbers (born 19 September 1947) is a Flemish singer, script writer, and political activist. 1947–1973 Childhood, Studies, music talent scouting Jef Elbers’ was born in Brussels, the son of a Ukrainian mother. His father, a Brussels citizen, worked as head of department at the national telegraph and telephone company (RTT) and his mother was a housewife. Jules De Corte
Julius "Jules" de Corte (29 March 1924 – 16 February 1996) was probably one of the most famous blind singer-songwriters from the Netherlands. Early life Julius de Corte was born on 29 March 1924 in Deurne to Peer de Corte and Anna van Eijk. His father had socialist ideals and in 1923 led a strike, the failure of which had a significant impact on the already poor family. At fourteen months, Jules developed a middle ear infection, which eventually led to him becoming blind. He would spend the rest of his childhood in two Catholic institutions for the blind in Grave, which provided him with a good education but no affection. In the last year of the Second World War, allied soldiers were accommodated in the institute and De Corte sang songs for them and played the piano. Judy Cheeks (born February 13, 1954) is an American singer and actress. In the 1970s and 1980s, she recorded as a soul and R&B singer, before releasing more dance-oriented music in the 1990s.
