Jef Elbers
Jef Elbers (born 19 September 1947) is a Flemish singer, script writer, and political activist. 1947–1973 Childhood, Studies, music talent scouting Jef Elbers’ was born in Brussels, the son of a Ukrainian mother. His father, a Brussels citizen, worked as head of department at the national telegraph and telephone company (RTT) and his mother was a housewife. His parents survived the Nazi concentration camps: his father ended up there as a prisoner of war, while his Ukrainian mother, as ''Untermensch'', was a victim of the racial policy of Nazi Germany. This makes him a so-called victim of the second generation. Jef Elbers attended the Jesuit College, studying Latin and Sciences. He was married, but is now divorced. He has 5 children. In 1973 he won a talent competition, hosted by radio station Omroep Brabant from the broadcasting network of the Belgian Radio and Television. Miet Smet (born 5 April 1943) is a Belgian politician for the Christian Democratic and Flemish party (CD&V). Career In 1988, Smet became the president of the European Centre for Workers' Questions, a position which she held till 1995. Career in national politics Smet was the founder (1973) and first president (until 1982) of the Christian People's Party political women's organisation, Vrouw en Maatschappij (Woman and Society). She was elected to the Belgian Chamber of People's Representatives in 1978. In 1985 she became State Secretary of Environmental Affairs, and negotiated an Equal Opportunities portfolio. While Smet's competencies cover all aspects of social emancipation, she focused on violence against women, women's economic position and their participation in decision-making. Bert Eriksson
Armand Albert (Bert) Eriksson (30 June 1931 – 2 October 2005) was a leading Flemish nationalist. Biography Born in Antwerp. His father was a sailor from Finland his mother was Flemish. Eriksson became a Nazi at an early age and joined the Hitler Youth before the end of the Second World War. A staunch anti-communist, he went in 1950 to fight in the Korean War as a paratrooper. In 1968 he opened a cafe, 'Lokaal Odal', in Antwerp which became a leading centre for neo-Nazis after the War. He took command of the Vlaamse Militanten Orde (VMO) in 1971 after it had been disbanded by founder Bob Maes and turned it towards a more extreme right path. After the VMO was outlawed in 1984 he started the Odal Group, which presented itself as the successor to the VMO. Wannes Van de Velde (29 April 1937 – 10 November 2008), born Willy Cecile Johannes Van de Velde, in Antwerp, was a Flemish folk singer, guitarist, musician, poet, puppeteer and artist. He is most famous for his songs ''Ik Wil deze Nacht in de Straten Verdwalen'' (1973), ''Mijn Mansarde'' and ''De Brug van Willebroek'' (1990). His work is often categorized as kleinkunst. Van de Velde was known for singing in his local dialect. Biography His father, Jaak Van de Velde, was a metal worker and talented singer, his mother a housewife and singer. He grew up in the Zirkstraat, near the Antwerp Red Light district. At home the young boy was always surrounded by music. Karel Cornelia Constantijn Dillen (16 October 1925 – 27 April 2007) was a far-right Belgian politician and Flemish nationalist. Life According to Paul Beliën, editor of the Brussels Journal, "Dillen came from a non-political background. The Egmont pact ( nl, Egmontpact; french: Pacte d'Egmont; german: Egmont-Pakt) of 1977 is an agreement on the reform of Belgium into a federal state and on the relations between the linguistic communities in the country. The pact was not carried out due to the resignation of the government, but important elements of the pact were used in later Belgian state reforms. The pact was agreed in 1977 between the majority parties of the government Tindemans IV, which was a coalition between CVP, PSC, BSP-PSB, Volksunie and FDF.
