Dunkirk ( ; ; ; Picard language, Picard: ''Dunkèke''; ; or ) is a major port city in the Departments of France, department of Nord (French department), Nord in northern France. It lies from the Belgium, Belgian border. It has the third-largest French harbour. The population of the commune in 2019 was 86,279. Etymology and language use The name of Dunkirk derives from West Flemish 'dune' or 'dun (fortification), dun' and 'church', thus 'church in the dunes'. A smaller town 25 km (15 miles) farther up the Flemish coast originally shared the same name, but was later renamed Oostduinkerke(n) in order to avoid confusion. Patrice Vergriete
Patrice Vergriete (; born 4 July 1968) is a French politician who has served as Mayor of Dunkirk since 2024, previously holding the office from 2014 to 2023. He served in government as Minister Delegate for Housing (2023–2024) and Minister Delegate for Transport (2024) under successive Prime Ministers Élisabeth Borne and Gabriel Attal. Biography Born to a boilermaker father at Chantiers de France and a homemaker mother, Vergriete was raised in the bustling Glacis neighbourhood of Dunkirk. Following his completion of the baccalaureate, he pursued further education in Paris by attending a scientific preparatory programme at the prestigious Lycée Louis-le-Grand. Hôtel De Ville, Dunkirk
The (, ''City Hall'') is a municipal building in Dunkirk, Nord, northern France, standing on the Place Charles Valentin. It was designated a ''monument historique'' by the French government in 1989. History The first town hall of Dunkirk was erected on the current site in 1233. Gravelines and Dunkirk had been under English control, when they were attacked by the French marshal, Paul de Thermes, in 1558 during the Italian War of 1551–1559. The re-building of the town hall, which had been completely destroyed in the attack, was completed in 1562. The new structure, which was designed in the Gothic Revival style and featured fine stained glass windows, was reduced to a shell during a fire in 1642, and the subsequent reconstruction was completed in 1644. Bergues
Bergues (; ; ) is a Communes of France, commune in the Nord (French department), Nord Departments of France, department in northern France. It is situated to the south of Dunkirk and from the Belgium, Belgian border. Locally it is referred to as "the other Bruges in Flanders". Oostduinkerke
Oostduinkerke (; ; ) is a place on the southern west coast of Belgium, located in the province of West Flanders. Once a municipality of its own, Oostduinkerke now is a sub-municipality in the municipality of Koksijde. The name ''Oostduinkerke'' translates as 'East Dunkirk'. The town originally shared its name with the city of Dunkirk in current-day France; therefore, in the 13th century, ''Oost-'' was added to its name to avoid confusion with its namesake further to the west. Oostduinkerke lies amidst a dune area (approximately 2.4 km2; 1 sq. mi.), which is now a protected nature reserve. French Flemish (, Standard Dutch: , ) is a West Flemish dialect spoken in the north of contemporary France. Place names attest to Flemish having been spoken since the 8th century in the part of Flanders that was ceded to France at the 1659 Treaty of the Pyrenees, and which hence became known as French Flanders. Baldwin III (1 January 962), called the Young, was Count of Flanders, who briefly ruled the County of Flanders together with his father, Arnulf I, from 958 until his early death.
