Duivendrecht
Duivendrecht () is a village in the Dutch province of North Holland. It is a part of the municipality of Ouder-Amstel, and lies about 6 km southeast of Amsterdam’s city centre. In fact, it is surrounded by Amsterdam. History The village was first mentioned in 1308 as Doevendrecht, and means "ferry of Doeve (person)." Duivendrecht started to developed in the 19th century and has become encircled by Amsterdam, Diemen and the Bijlmermeer. The Catholic St Urbanus Church is a single aisled cruciform church with a double tower. It was built between 1877 and 1878 as a replacement of the 1840 church. The local Duivendrecht railway station is a major interchange point on the Dutch railway network. It opened in 1993 and is on the Amsterdam to Arnhem railway line, the Weesp to Leiden line as well as the Amsterdam Metro. Duivendrecht Railway Station
Duivendrecht station (Dvd) is a combined rail and metro station in Duivendrecht, Netherlands. The station opened on 23 May 1993 as part of the extension of the Zuidtak of the Amsterdam Ringspoorbaan, between Amsterdam RAI and Weesp. This station allows for the interchange between two grade-separated railways: *the Amsterdam–Arnhem railway on the upper floor, consisting of two island platforms with the outer sides serving heavy rail and the inner sides serving the Amsterdam Metro, which runs in between the tracks of the main railway. *the Weesp–Leiden railway on the lower floor, consisting of one broad island platform which also houses the station hall. Duivendrecht is largely an interchange station: the village itself is quite small. Diemen () is a town and municipality with a population of in the province of North Holland, Netherlands. It is located approximately 6 km (3.7 mi) southeast of Amsterdam's city centre, within the Amsterdam metropolitan area. Etymology The name ''Diemen'' comes from the river Diem, which originates from ''die eme'', meaning ''the water''. Wim Eijk
Willem Jacobus "Wim" Eijk (born 22 June 1953) is a Dutch prelate of the Catholic Church, a cardinal since 2012. He has been the Metropolitan Archbishop of Utrecht since 2007. He was Bishop of Groningen-Leeuwarden from 1999 to 2007. Before his clerical career he worked as a doctor; as a priest he made medical ethics the focus of his academic studies. Early life and studies Willem Jacobus Eijk was born on 22 June 1953 in Duivendrecht, North Holland, Netherlands. Eijk studied medicine at the University of Amsterdam and received his degree in 1978. In 1978 and 1979 he worked as a doctor specializing in internal medicine. He studied for the priesthood at the seminary of Rolduc in Kerkrade. Beginning in 1979 he combined his theological formation with the study of medical ethics at Leiden University. He was ordained to priesthood in 1985 and was incardinated in the Diocese of Roermond. Amsterdam Metro
The Amsterdam Metro ( nl, Amsterdamse metro) is a rapid transit system serving Amsterdam, Netherlands, and extending to the surrounding municipalities of Diemen and Ouder-Amstel. Until 2019 it also served the municipality of Amstelveen but this route was closed and converted into a tram line. The network is owned by the City of Amsterdam and operated by municipal public transport company Gemeente Vervoerbedrijf (GVB) which also operates trams, free ferries and local buses. Bijlmermeer
The Bijlmermeer (), or colloquially Bijlmer (), is one of the neighbourhoods that form the Amsterdam-Zuidoost borough (Dutch: ''stadsdeel'') of Amsterdam, Netherlands. To many people, the Bijlmer designation is used to refer to Amsterdam Zuidoost as a ''pars pro toto''. The other neighbourhoods in Amsterdam Zuidoost are Gaasperdam, Bullewijk, Venserpolder and Driemond. Weesp () is a city, an urban area in the municipality of Amsterdam and a former municipality in the province of North Holland, Netherlands. It had a population of in .
