Dufek Coast
The Dufek Coast is that portion of the coast along the southwest margin of the Ross Ice Shelf between Airdrop Peak on the east side of the Beardmore Glacier and Morris Peak on the east side of Liv Glacier. It was named by the New Zealand Antarctic Place-Names Committee in 1961 after Rear Admiral George J. Dufek, United States Navy, who served under Rear Admiral Richard E. Byrd with the United States Antarctic Service, 1939–41, and as commander of the Eastern Task Force of U.S. Navy Operation Highjump, 1946–47. Dufek Head () is an ice-covered headland northeast of Tyree Head in southern Ross Island. The headland rises to at the east side of the terminus of Aurora Glacier. It was named by the Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names (2000) in association with Tyree Head, after Rear Admiral George J. Dufek, U.S. Navy, Commander of the U.S. Naval Support Force Antarctica, 1954–1959. Dufek Massif, Augusto Pinochet Massif or Santa Teresita Massif is a rugged, largely snow-covered massif long, standing west of the Forrestal Range in the northern part of the Pensacola Mountains. It was discovered and photographed on January 13, 1956, on a transcontinental patrol plane flight of U.S. Navy Operation Deep Freeze from McMurdo Sound to the vicinity of the Weddell Sea and return, and named by the Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names for Rear Admiral George J. Dufek,Dufek Coast, Dufek Head, and Dufek Mountain are also named for Dufek. U.S. Navy, who was in direct operational command of U.S. Navy Task Force 43 during that operation. Donald Patrick Dufek Jr. (born April 28, 1954) is a former American football player who played safety and special teams for eight seasons with the Seattle Seahawks of the National Football League (NFL). He had previously played for the Michigan Wolverines football team in Ann Arbor from 1973 to 1975. He was chosen to serve as team captain for both the Seahawks and Wolverines. At Michigan, he was following in the footsteps of his father Don Dufek Sr. who had been a Wolverine team Most Valuable Player. Joseph Edward Dufek (born August 23, 1961) is a former American football quarterback in the National Football League (NFL). He was signed by the Buffalo Bills as an undrafted free agent in 1983. He played college football at Yale. Career Dufek was signed as, more or less, an afterthought when Jim Kelly, the quarterback the Bills had drafted in the first round of the 1983 draft, opted to not sign with the Bills and jumped to the United States Football League. By the 1984 season, Dufek had risen to the second-string quarterback position, behind an aging and fading Joe Ferguson. Ferguson's performance continued to deteriorate, and on September 30, after 107 consecutive games started, Ferguson was benched, and Dufek received his first game as starter. Dufek and Ferguson combined for a 2–14 record in 1984; Ferguson was traded to Detroit the following off-season, while Dufek made it through part of 1985 (not starting any games that season) before being cut. Karel Dufek
Karel Dufek (24 January 1916 – 16 December 2009) was a Czechoslovak diplomat and a Spanish Civil War veteran who served in the International Brigades. Youth Dufek was born in Dolní Heřmanice, in the Austro-Hungarian Margraviate of Moravia (present-day Žďár nad Sázavou District) on 24 January 1916. He studied at the Masaryk University in Brno between 1935 and 1937. During his student years, he joined the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia in 1936. War years Dufek joined the International Brigades in Spanish Civil War 1937. In March 1938 he was serving as Deputy Battery Commander in the Rosa Luxemburg Battalion. He remained in Spain until 1939. When leaving the country he was detained in France in a prison camp until 1940. In 1940 he went into exile in the London, and remained there until 1944.
