DuPont Country Club
Along Delaware Route 141 there are a number of historic sites that trace the history of both the Du Pont family and the DuPont company. At the southwest end is DuPont’s Chestnut Run Plaza and at the northeastern end is the Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children. Between are a number of sites on the National Register of Historic Places. The historic locations include equal portion of the history of the American chemical industry, the role of the DuPont family - their estates and gardens - and the philanthropy of a distinguished American family. Eugène du Pont (November 16, 1840 – January 28, 1902) was an American businessman who served as the first head of the modern-day DuPont corporation. Life and education Du Pont was born on November 16, 1840 at Hagley House in New Castle County, Delaware, son of Alexis Irénée du Pont and grandson of DuPont founder Éleuthère Irénée du Pont (1771–1834). His brothers were Alexis Irénée du Pont Jr. and Francis Gurney du Pont. Eugène was the first head of the modern DuPont corporation, seeing the corporation into the 20th century. Eugène graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1861 with a bachelor of arts degree. Centerville (also known as Centreville) is an unincorporated community in New Castle County, Delaware, United States. Centerville is now known primarily for being the location of Du Pont family estates, as well as several other wealthy business families from nearby Wilmington, and the home of Governor Jack Markell. Kennett Square is a borough in Chester County, Pennsylvania, United States. The Delaware Historical Society began in 1864 as an effort to preserve documents from the Civil War. Since then, it has expanded into a statewide historical institution with several buildings, including Old Town Hall and the Delaware History Museum, in Wilmington and the historic Read House & Gardens in New Castle.
