Centreville, Delaware
Centerville, also known as Centreville, is an unincorporated community in New Castle County, Delaware, United States. Centerville is now known primarily for being the location of Du Pont family estates, as well as several other wealthy business families from nearby Wilmington, and the home of Governor Jack Markell. History The village developed along the Kennett and Wilmington Pike, which was chartered by the Delaware Legislature in 1811. The road, now known as Delaware Route 52 or the Kennett Pike, is part of the Brandywine Valley Scenic Byway, a National Scenic Byway. The village was named Centerville as it lay midway between Kennett Square, Pennsylvania and Wilmington. A group of fifteen houses, most of the village, was listed as the Centreville Historic District by the National Register of Historic Places in 1982. The museum and estate were the home of Henry Francis du Pont (1880–1969), Winterthur's founder and a prominent antiques collector and horticulturist. History Estate The property where Winterthur sits was purchased by Éleuthère Irénée du Pont (E. I. du Pont) between 1810 and 1818 and was used for farming and sheep-raising. In 1837, E. I. du Pont's heirs sold 445 acres of the land to E. I. du Pont's business partner from France, Jacques Antoine Bidermann (1790–1865) and his wife Evelina Gabrielle du Pont (1796–1863) for the purpose of establishing their estate. Brandywine Creek State Park
Brandywine Creek State Park is a public recreation area located north of Wilmington, Delaware along the Brandywine Creek. The state park is in area and much of the park was part of a Du Pont family estate and dairy farm before becoming a state park in 1965. It contains the first two nature preserves in Delaware, Tulip Tree Woods and Freshwater Marsh. Flint Woods is a satellite area of the park and has become the park's third nature preserve.
