Douglas Hardcastle
Douglas Scott Hardcastle (1886 – 9 May 1915) was an English professional footballer who played as an inside left in the Football League for Derby County. Personal life Hardcastle worked as a stove grate patternmaker. He served as an appointed lance corporal in the Sherwood Foresters during the First World War and was killed in action on the Western Front on 9 May 1915. Worksop
Worksop ( ) is a market town in the Bassetlaw District in Nottinghamshire, England. It is located east-south-east of Sheffield, close to Nottinghamshire's borders with South Yorkshire and Derbyshire, on the River Ryton and not far from the northern edge of Sherwood Forest. Other nearby towns include Chesterfield, Doncaster, Retford, Gainsborough and Mansfield. Worksop had a population of 41,820 as of the 2011 Census and it is twinned with the German town Garbsen. The Ploegsteert Memorial to the Missing is a Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC) memorial in Belgium for missing soldiers of World War I. It commemorates men from the Allied Powers who fought on the northern Western Front outside the Ypres Salient and whose graves are unknown. The memorial is located in the village of Ploegsteert and stands in the middle of '' Berks Cemetery Extension''. History of the location After Ploegsteert Wood (referred to colloquially as "Plug Street") had been the site of fierce fighting at the start of the war, it became a relatively quiet sector where no major action took place. Allied units were sent here to recuperate and retrain after fighting elsewhere and before returning to active operations. Football League First Division
The Football League First Division was a division of the Football League in England from 1888 until 2004. It was the top division in the English football league system from the season 1888–89 until 1991–92, a century in which the First Division's winning club became English men's football champions. The First Division contained between 12 and 24 clubs, playing each other home and away in a double round robin. The competition was based on two points for a win from 1888 until the increase to three points for a win in 1981. After the creation of the Premier League, the name First Division was given to the second-tier division (from 1992). The name ceased to exist after the 2003–04 First Division season.
