Doug Holyday
Douglas Charles Holyday (born 1942) is a politician in Ontario, Canada. He is a former member of the Legislative Assembly of Ontario, representing the riding of Etobicoke—Lakeshore for the Progressive Conservative Party of Ontario before being defeated by Peter Milczyn in the Ontario general election of 2014. Prior to his election to the legislature, Holyday was a longtime Toronto City Councillor and deputy mayor, representing Ward 3 in Etobicoke Centre, and was the last mayor of the suburban city of Etobicoke prior to the municipal amalgamation of Toronto. Political career An insurance broker by profession, Holyday was first elected to Etobicoke City Council as an alderman in 1982. 1997 Toronto Municipal Election
The 1997 Toronto municipal election was the first election held for offices in the amalgamated "megacity" of Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The elections were administered by the old City of Toronto and its five suburbs within Metropolitan Toronto. The vote was held November 10, 1997, electing the mayor and 56 councillors in 28 wards who took office on January 1, 1998, the day of the amalgamation. The election resulted in a showdown between Barbara Hall, the one-term mayor of the old city of Toronto, and Mel Lastman, who had been mayor of the former Toronto suburb of North York for 25 years. The 1994 Toronto municipal election was held in November 1994 to elect councillors in Metropolitan Toronto, Ontario, Canada, and mayors, councillors and school trustees in Toronto, York, East York, North York, Scarborough and Etobicoke. Etobicoke, Ontario
Etobicoke (, ) is an administrative district of, and one of six municipalities amalgamation of Toronto, amalgamated into, the city of Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Comprising the city's west-end, Etobicoke was first settled by Europeans in the 1790s, and the municipality grew into city status in the 20th century. In municipal government, a Board of Control is an executive body that usually deals with financial and administrative matters. The idea is that a small body of four or five people is better able to make certain decisions than a large, unwieldy city council. Boards of Control were introduced in many North American municipalities in the early 20th century as a product of the municipal reform movement. They proved unpopular with many as they tended to centralize power in a small body while disempowering city councils.
