Dolphinton Branch Line
Dolphinton is a village and parish in Lanarkshire, Scotland. It is located northeast of Biggar, 11 miles (18 km) northeast of Carstairs, 10 miles (16 km) southwest of Leadburn and 27 miles (43 km) southwest of Edinburgh, on the A702 road. The local manor belonged in the 12th century to Dolfine, elder brother of the first Earl of Dunbar. The estate was owned in various forms by the Brown family from the sixteenth till the nineteenth centuries, when it passed to the McKenzie family by marriage. The parish has an area of . Dunsyre
Dunsyre ( gd, Dùn Saghair) is a village in South Lanarkshire, Scotland. It is from Carnwath. Dunsyre is associated with an ancient barony and parish church. The name of Dunsyre is of Celtic origin and is supposed to signify the "Hill of the Seer." It is located by the burn known as the South Medwin Water. The Battle of Rullion Green took place on 28 November 1666, near the Pentland Hills, in Midlothian, Scotland. It was the only significant battle of the Pentland Rising, a brief revolt by Covenanter dissidents against the Scottish government. Sparked by opposition to the Restoration of the episcopacy of Scotland, restoration of episcopalianism in the Church of Scotland, a Covenanter army under James Wallace of Auchens, Colonel James Wallace was defeated by a government force led by Tam Dalyell of the Binns. Joseph Learmont
Major Joseph Learmont was major in the Scottish Covenanter army. He was a tailor before he began his military career. He was proprietor of the lands of Newholm, near Dolphinton, which lay partly in the shire of Peebles and partly in that of Lanark. Battles He was fined £1200 Scots due to Middleton's Act of 1662 for having complied with Cromwell's forces. He was second in command, leading the Covenanters' horse on the left at Rullion Green in 1666. One source says he led the main attack "in which being unsuccessful, a rout ensued, but he managed to escape, along with William Veitch, a preacher, who afterwards wrote an account of the affair, and lived to be minister of Peebles." Peebles Railway
The Peebles Railway was a railway company that built a line connecting the town of Peebles in Peeblesshire, Scotland, with Edinburgh. It opened on 4 July 1855, and it worked its own trains. The friendly North British Railway later promoted a line, at first identified as the Galashiels, Innerleithen and Peebles Railway, from Peebles to Galashiels, making a connection with the Peebles Railway there, and also with the Caledonian Railway which had its own line at Peebles. The GI&PR line was built by the North British Railway and opened on 1 October 1864. In 1860 the Peebles Railway company leased its line to the North British Railway, which operated the Galashiels and Edinburgh sections as a continuous through route.
